Fans of the legendary songwriter Bruce Springsteen were devastated to see the veteran performer leave out one song on his return to Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.
Colbert, 62, confirmed that The Late Show would come to an end later this May after CBS opted not to renew the show for another season. The talk show host has suggested CBS did not renew the show after facing threats from President of the United States Donald Trump. Colbert has filled his final few shows with staggering guest appearances, even performing with David Byrne on a previous episode in the run up to his final broadcast. Springsteen appeared on the show last night (May 20) to perform Streets of Minneapolis. The song has been a staple of the recent Land of Hope and Dreams live tour of North America, though some fans were left disappointed that another Springsteen classic did not feature on the show.
Springsteen told the crowd: “I am here tonight to support Stephen, because you’re the first guy in America who lost his show because we’ve got a president who can’t take a joke. And because Larry and David Ellison feel the need to kiss his ass to get what they want.”
Fans took to the r/BruceSpringsteen subreddit to share their grievances with the lack of one song. A user posted: “I can dream right? If he does not do Last Man Standing in honour of Colbert, he already did Land of Hope and Dreams on the last Jon Stewart show, he was the last [David] Letterman musical guest, and of course, with Conan [O’Brien] at the end too.
“I hope he either mentions, or even has a song about being the last one on that spot – the spot that Elvis, the Beatles, Jim Morrison, Mick [Jagger] and Keith [Richards] – and even that guy spinning plates… were all on that spot, and now Bruce is the last one.”
A performance of Last Man Standing did not materialise, with Springsteen opting to perform his recently released protest song, Streets of Minneapolis, instead. Others had tipped Thunder Road to be the last song performed by Springsteen on Colbert’s show, though this did not materialise either.
A fan wrote: “I’m guessing Colbert’s favourite song. Thunder Road. He mentioned it when Bruce was on many years ago. I mean it’s his show, and that would be the best tribute.” Another suggested the show would be used as a platform to prop up a song Springsteen is hoping will be one of his modern classics.
They wrote: “Bruce loves Land of Hope and Dreams. He’s really pushing for it to be one of his ‘classics’ and I imagine it’s what he’ll play.” A second added: “I think it will be Streets of Minneapolis.” A third wrote: “I do as well. Not thrilled, but I understand.”
