The Beatles fans name their favourite covers of the Fab Four’s best songs

Fans of The Beatles have shared their favourite covers of the Fab Four’s very best songs.

There is no shortage of Beatles covers, with artists like Beyonce, Joe Cocker, and Elliott Smith all lending their voice to songs from the band. Fans are now trying to decide which song from the group featuring John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, has the best cover. A post to the r/TheBeatles subreddit saw fans discuss the very best of these covers, with the original poster suggesting Arctic Monkeys’ take on All My Loving is the pinnacle. They asked: “Favourite cover of a Beatles song? Obviously no one does it quite like the Beatles, but they are put on such a pedestal that people blindly hate every cover for not ‘living up to them’, despite however good or bad the cover actually is.

“I’m biased, but for me it’s gotta be Arctic Monkeys’ cover of All My Loving, love the different light it brings to the song being slowed down with Turner’s deeper voice.” Fans of The Beatles and other bands have since shared their favourite performances of Fab Four songs.

One user suggested Siouxsie and the Banshees had “made it their own” when it came to Dear Prudence. Another fan has suggested The Mamas and The Papas’ tremendous cover of I Call Your Name. They wrote: “This cover makes up for all the bands who (imo) put out pointless covers of Beatles tracks. M&P took a Beatles throwaway and elevated it.”

Another user agreed with the praise for The Mamas and The Papas’ cover. They wrote: “I honestly thought it was a Mamas and Papas song, and heard the Beatles version, and thought, ‘Oh cool, they’re doing a version of the Mamas & Paps song!’ Yeah, definitely surprised to find out it was the opposite!”

A third added: “I’d go so far as to say that the cover surpasses the original.” Other users were left praising The Beatles’ peers, with Johnny Cash’s In My Life giving one fan goosebumps. They wrote: “My answer is always the same to this question, and it’s Johnny Cash’s version of In My Life. It is just such a moving version, I get goosebumps & tear up a little every time I hear it.”

An inevitable mention of Joe Cocker’s With a Little Help from My Friends was also spotted in the comment. His cover of She Came in Through the Bathroom Window was also singled out by listeners.

Another user wrote: “I recently heard a version of Jeff Beck’s take on A Day in the Life on a local radio station that blew my mind. I have sought out the particular recording since (not sure if it was a live performance or not) but haven’t located it yet.”

Fiona Apple was also praised for her cover of Across the Universe. The comment reads: “Fiona Apple does a good cover of Across The Universe, which sounds honest, authentic, and strangely sincere and satisfying. That’s not an easy task but she does it with reverence and humility.”

Though not a song by The Beatles, the McCartney and Wings song, Let Me Roll It, was praised by one fan who said the Jerry Garcia Band cover is well worth a listen.
