Fans of the legendary songwriter Neil Young are pointing to some of his “best shows” ahead of his headline slot at Glastonbury Festival.
Young, 79, will headline the Pyramid Stage of this year’s Worthy Farm event, with fans now digging into his back catalogue for examples of his live work. A post to the r/NeilYoung subreddit reads: “Boarding House were his best acoustic shows ever. I’ll die on this hill honestly, best acoustic Cowgirl ever, some of his finest acoustic sounds in general, the best version of Birds ever. Thrasher is unbelievable and this might be a hot take but this single mini tour had his best vocals on any tour ever.”
High praise for the show comes as fans suggest other live recordings from Young, which were recently documented in the film Coastal, as well as the soundtrack of the same name.
Fans were full of praise for the Boarding House shows, with a tape to the 1978 performance found below. One user wrote: “They were amazing! The versions of Shots, Ride My Llama and Out of My Mind are absolutely incredible.”
The original poster agreed, adding: “Out of My Mind is one of the best songs he wrote, there’s something about the first Buffalo Springfield album songs of Neil’s that have a very winter-time cosy feel to them. Hard to explain for me, but just the arrangements and the song and the lyrics, feels like a blanket near a fireplace or something, great album and great songs.”
Another user aired their hopes of a vinyl release of the album, writing: “Hoping it comes out as a vinyl release in its proper order.” Another has suggested a separate live performance may prove necessary listening for those wanting to prepare themselves for Young’s headline slot at Glastonbury Festival this year.
The fan wrote: “Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House is my go to. I love all the banter and the Buffalo Springfield songs on those 60s acoustic shows. Then, of course, the solo portions from the Tonight’s the Night tour are also heart-wrenching.”
Another fan agreed, adding: “Canterbury House has a special place in my heart. I live in Ann Arbor and that place still is a very important part of our community.”
