Pink Floyd fans have shared their “absolute favourite” version of a classic song featured on The Wall.
While there are plenty of live versions to choose from, fans of the band took to the r/PinkFloyd subreddit and shared what they believed was the definitive version. Though the song featured on Pink Floyd‘s 1979 album, The Wall, it’s a live album rendition, which was released a year later, that has fans hooked. A listener praised the Is There Anybody Out There? live performance from the band, with Roger Waters and David Gilmour singled out for praise. One person shared the album cover to the subreddit and wrote: “I gotta say, as my teenage self would say, ‘This fucking slaps’. That is all.” It wasn’t all for those who replied, praising Run Like Hell from Is There Anybody Out There? as a perfect version of the classic track.
One person wrote: “My absolute favourite version of this song. Roger’s scream at the beginning is so perfect.” Another agreed, adding: “Agreed. I can’t find this anywhere. I have it on CD.” A third shared: “The whole album is my favourite version of the album. This live version has absolutely ruined the studio version for me.”
It was high praise for Is There Anybody Out There?, an album which has been hailed as a brain-meltingly brilliant piece. One fan wrote: “First time I heard this version of Mother, my brain almost melted.” Another listener is holding out hopes of a vinyl release, and praised the whole album as an “amazing” listen.
They wrote: “I really wish they would release an official vinyl version of this. Is There Anybody Out There? is my preferred version of The Wall. Such an amazing live performance.”
A third added: “This was a great album. The packaging was out of this world. I knew it would be wise of me to pick one up. There are too many great performances on here. Vera is a real heartbreaker on here. I’ll give it five slaps outta five.”
Gilmour also received plenty of praise from listeners who believed his guitar riff is “out of control.” They wrote: “Love the way the guitar riff at the start is just so loose, out of time, and out of control. And it just feels like a crack of a whip the way it grabs hold of the beat. Then the drums come in and absolutely double down on it.
“Such an amazing musical simile for Pink’s state of mind at that exact moment. From kind of drugged up and spaced out, to definite and singular of purpose. Gives me the chills every time.”
Some were left sharing their love of the “aggressive” Run Like Hell performance from another album, Delicate Sounds of Thunder. They wrote: “I love the aggressive, shouty energy of the live version from Delicate Sounds of Thunder (not saying it’s the best version, but I accidentally ended up with a copy of the album on vinyl, and I’ve really connected with it ever since). It’s such a powerful closer to their live show!”
