Paul McCartney fans believe The Beatles legend will perform deep cuts and new songs during his Saturday Night Live appearance.
The upcoming performance, which will see McCartney perform as musical guest and Will Ferrell host the show, has got fans excited as they try and figure out what the veteran performer will play. In his last appearance on the show, McCartney performed The Beatles‘ Abbey Road medley at a fiftieth anniversary performance. His upcoming appearance has sparked speculation on the r/PaulMcCartney subreddit, where fans attempted to break down what he could play. Some have suggested Ringo Starr may make an appearance to perform The Boys of Dungeon Lane single, Home to Us, while others believe it’ll be nothing but Wings hits from McCartney.
A fan asked: “What songs do you think Paul is going to play on SNL this weekend? I’m not sure if anyone has asked this yet, so if someone has, sorry! But I’m curious, what do you think Paul is going to play? Song from his new album or a classic?”
One fan replied: “Something Wings, he’s really been pushing wings lately. I’d guess a new song, Jet, Let ‘Em In or Band on the Run and then a Beatles song to close.” Another added: “As You Lie There. Deep Deep Feeling.” A third suggested it could be a solo song, a Wings hit, and a Beatles classic. They wrote: “Days We Left Behind, Jet, and a Beatles song.”
Others are hopeful that a deep cut track could be used as a segue between the songs, though the chances of this remain unlikely. The fan wrote: “Would love to see him do Wild Honey Pie as a short segue into one of his new songs. That’d be a hoot.”
Another added: “Days We Left Behind, Home to Us (with Ringo?!), and then a Beatles or Wings so for the finale (Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey?)”
A third suggested that, should Starr appear for the performance, it would mean Lorne Michaels could finally pay out on his offer for a Beatles reunion on Saturday Night Live. The fan wrote: “It’d be cool to see him being Ringo out and do Home To Us. And Lorne should give them a check for $3000.”
Show producer Lorne Michaels was serious in his offer to Paul McCartney and John Lennon after he was told the pair were together in New York, just a block away. The pair had been at the Dakota apartments, with McCartney arriving at Lennon’s apartment unexpectedly with his guitar. Michaels’ offer was serious, as was the sum of money, which may seem relatively low at the time considering later lucrative offers to the Fab Four for reunion shows.
He said: “In my book, The Beatles are the best thing that ever happened to music. It goes even deeper than that — you’re not just a musical group, you’re a part of us. We grew up with you. Now, we’ve heard and read a lot about personality and legal conflicts that might prevent you guys from reuniting.
“That’s something which is none of my business. That’s a personal problem. You guys will have to handle that. But it’s also been said that no one has yet to come up with enough money to satisfy you. Well, if it’s money you want, there’s no problem here. The National Broadcasting Company has authorised me to offer you this cheque to be on our show. A certified cheque for $3,000.
“‘She Loves You,’ yeah, yeah, yeah – that’s $1,000 right there. You know the words. It’ll be easy. Like I said, this is made out to ‘The Beatles.’ You divide it any way you want. If you want to give Ringo [Starr] less, that’s up to you. I’d rather not get involved.”
