Roger Waters has selected three albums he wants to be remembered by, and one of them is from his solo discography.
The veteran songwriter has more than a few albums to choose from, with the founding Pink Floyd member selecting two from his time in the band and a solo album. Speaking to Poison hitmaker Alice Cooper about the albums he wants to be remembered by, Waters suggested two of the biggest albums he had worked on and a solo piece, which he believes married the “visual elements and the music” of rock shows around the world. Long-term listeners will not be surprised by two of the choices, with Waters noting The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall as two of the three albums he hopes will define him in the years to come.
But a solo album choice, which beat out the likes of Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, may surprise some fans. He told Cooper: “I’d like to be remembered for The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, [and] Amused to Death, you know the songs.”
It was not just the music Waters wants to be remembered for, with the veteran songwriter hoping his impact on arena rock is also remembered. He said: “I’d like to be remembered for having a vision of arena rock as theatre, for developing the marriage between visual elements and the music to make the rock and roll experience more visceral.
“I guess I’d like to be remembered for unashamedly making my mark on the page without fear of failure or reprisal.” Waters has made the most of the three albums mentioned in his interview with Cooper, touring The Wall frequently after departing Pink Floyd in 1985.
A version of Comfortably Numb, which featured in Waters’ production of The Wall in Berlin, received plenty of praise from fans, who are still impressed by the star-studded line-up for the show.
Five years after his departure from the group, Waters would bring a huge stage version of the album to life. In his adaptation, he made a series of special guests the feature of the show, including Sinead O’Connor, The Band, and Van Morrison. Both the former backing band of Bob Dylan and Moondance mastermind joined Waters for this rendition of Comfortably Numb, which fans believe is the best version of the song available. An upload of the performance to YouTube has left fans floored, with many considering it to be a high point in Waters’ career.
One fan wrote: “Lyrics, music, singers, production… this is one of the best records ever created. God bless these minstrels, for the joy, and thought, they bring to us!” Another added: “Van Morrison is, without a doubt, one of the top five musical talents of all time. The man has genius in every cell of his being.”
A third shared: “This is a masterpiece in music history. Simply the best cover version of an original song that I’ve ever heard, absolutely overwhelming, perfect… magic.” Listeners were in agreement on Morrison being the key to what makes this the best rendition of Comfortably Numb. Amused to Death is superb.Notable for it’s brilliant recording and dynamics.I love Roger Waters lyrics and the superb instrumentalists guesting make it so special to me.Amazing album!
I’m Jewish so always swimming upstream. Roger is PINK. DSOTM THE WALL AND AMUSED TO DEATH are by far the 3 greatest albums ever. The Lyrics are grade A+ the melodies are haunting and David Gilmour is the luckiest guitar player for stepping in when Syd imploded.
