A song from the legendary group Electric Light Orchestra has been dubbed an “old-fashioned shuffle” by songwriter Jeff Lynne.
The frontman, who will bow out from live performance later this year at Hyde Park in London, gave a track-by-track breakdown of From Out of Nowhere, the most recently released ELO album. Lynne, 76, shared his thoughts on each song, with another track featured on the album dubbed one of his favourites. One song provided the album with an “old-fashioned shuffle” feel, one which Lynne seemed particularly proud of. In an interview with Louder Sound, where Lynne broke down each song from the album, he shared the “different” sound he managed to make at his studio in Los Angeles.
Lynne said: “This is an old-fashioned shuffle, like a 50s kind of thing. I really like this one. I enjoy the rhythm, and I like the simple chords. The sound is good, and the piano is really nice.
“All the songs were done in my studio at home in LA. It’s funny: it depends on the day, but sometimes you just get a different sound, where you put your microphones is obviously a lot of it – but I really like the sound of this one.”
Whether the song makes it into the Hyde Park setlist is yet to be seen, but it appears Goin’ Out On Me has yet to be played live by Lynne and the band. The ELO frontman promised a few surprises for the final show set, and with Dhani Harrison on the bill, fans believe Lynne may cover a few Traveling Wilbury songs.
Elsewhere on the line-up are The Doobie Brothers, whose recently released album, Walk This Road, received a two-star review from Cult Following. The review, which can be read here, reads: “The Doobie Brothers have solid vocals, decent instrumentals, but a massive hole where the meaning should be.”
Fans of ELO are looking forward to the Hyde Park show, with a few stop-offs in Manchester and Birmingham preceding the final ELO show. Some fans of the band believe there are more than a few surprises in store for the attending fans.
In a post made to the r/ELO subreddit, long-time listeners shared their thoughts on what could be in store for the group. One user wrote: “It would be nice to see Bob Dylan and Dhani Harrison come out to do some Wilburys’ songs.” Another added: “Dhani Harrison is probably a high probability. Joe Walsh, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr less so but still.”
Another wrote: “Obviously would be cool if Bev popped up. Agree that Dhani will almost certainly be there to play Handle With Care. I wonder about any more contemporary artists like when Ed Sheeran joined him at the Grammys that year. I actually think Paul and Ringo are strong possibilities, or maybe just my personal wishful thinking.”
