A cover of a classic song by The Smiths, covered by Noel Gallagher, has been praised by fans of the Oasis songwriter.
Gallagher, who will reunite with brother Liam on July 4 for the first in a series of sold-out Oasis gigs, was praised for his cover of the Morrissey-penned track. Gallagher is no stranger to cover songs, with the works of Slade and The Beatles adapted to the stage and studio by Oasis. But a solo version of one of The Smiths’ biggest hits has struck a chord with fans, who are calling it a “classic cover.” Others are suggesting the strength of the song comes from Gallagher being himself and not trying to imitate Morrissey.
A post to the r/Oasis subreddit has seen fans praise the song, as have members of the public who listened to Gallagher’s cover of There Is a Light That Never Goes Out on YouTube. One user wrote: “Classic cover. If you want to buy it and a few really good versions of Oasis songs (as well as two more covers with Paul Weller) search for The Dreams We Have As Children.”
Another added: “I’ve been listening to this a lot lately since I learned this cover on guitar. Really fun one to play. Gotta love the emotion Noel puts into it.” Gallagher featured the song in his Royal Albert Hall gig, performing a series of Oasis hits including Wonderwall and Slide Away, as well as covering The Beatles’ All You Need is Love.
But it was his cover of The Smiths’ There Is a Light That Never Goes Out which won audiences over, with many still praising Gallagher for his work. Some have gone as far as to call it a “masterpiece” of a cover, and many agree it’s due to one crucial reason.
One user wrote: “He doesn’t try to imitate Morrissey and that’s great. Noel is always great.” Another added: “it’s the saddest song ever but wonderfully beautiful. Noel not only sings perfectly his songs and covers, but he has his own way of feeling the music he plays.
“Some people tried to criticise Oasis on the meaning of their songs, saying their lyrics were poor, but those people don’t know that music’s mainly made for creating feelings for the audience, no matter how ‘philosophical’ the lyrics can be.”
A third wrote: “Noel loves this song, and he’s proud of his cover. The Smiths are sacred to him and when I listen to him play I hear that it’s with his own feeling and interpretation that he has formed with the many times he has listened to it. It’s nice to see a great artist appreciate another.”
Gallagher’s respect for The Smiths runs deep, with the Oasis songwriter once calling the Morrissey and Johnny Marr-featuring band the “most unique” group to come out of Britan.
In an appearance on Netflix’s Once in a Lifetime sessions, Gallagher said: “I never invented anything like The Smiths, who were the most unique band ever to come out of England. So I had an idea of what it should be like, but then when the songs came it was just unbelievable.”
