Paul McCartney’s The Boys of Dungeon Lane could be ‘his final full-length album’, fans say

Fans of the legendary songwriter Paul McCartney believe his upcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, could be his last. The veteran performer will release his first studio album since 2020’s McCartney III, and avid listeners believe this could be the last we hear from McCartney in the studio. The 84-year-old is rumoured to be touring later this year, though no details have yet been confirmed. Fans have taken to the r/PaulMcCartney subreddit to ask whether or not The Boys of Dungeon Lane will be his final album. While many believe McCartney has more in him on stage, the subjects and reflections heard on the songs so far for the album, released on May 29, have some people wondering if this is the final bow for The Beatles and Wings member.

A fan asked: “Do you think this new album will be Paul’s last one? With Paul McCartney turning 84 this year and his new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, feeling very retrospective and nostalgic, it feels like it could be his final full-length album.” Some fans believe this could be the end of McCartney’s time in the studio, while others suggested there is no end in sight to the material the Let It Be hitmaker will release.

One fan wrote: “It feels like a bookend, but I doubt it’s his last album. He is 84 this year, and in recent interviews seems like he is starting to slow down a bit. I expect to see touring slow down a bit, but not stop. He will make music and tour as long as he is capable of doing it, but I do see this as the point where things become a bit less frequent.”

Another added: “No, people started saying this since Memory Almost Full, 20 years ago. You never know, with a little luck, the upcoming 20 years will have a few more albums of his. The amount that he is recording that doesn’t make the final cut is enormous, so in terms of material/ideas, there is still a lot.”

A third wrote: “I think it depends entirely on how many years, especially good years, he’s got left. As long as he’s alive and healthy, he’s never going to just retire from making music. He can’t help himself but work.” While some believe McCartney still has the time and energy to make music, others suggested that The Boys of Dungeon Lane should not have been an album project.

One person suggested: “No, I don’t think he’s done. In the end, recording is easier than touring. But I wish they’d done a documentary on this album, instead of always focusing on the past.” Another agreed, adding: “I’d love to see some behind-the-scenes stuff on him creating the album, songs in progress, etc, sort of like we saw with McCartney III. But I can imagine Paul is quite protective of his creative process.

“I feel like Paul doesn’t think highly enough of his own stuff because he’s always mentally comparing it to the Beatles. He never talks about his old solo records, and only recently has he really been talking about even the Wings era stuff.”

But some fans came back to one question looming over The Boys of Dungeon Lane, and just how long it took McCartney to make. They asked: “Since this full-length album took 6 years to come out, if it’s going to take even longer next time, wouldn’t this be his last one?” Others cited McCartney III, which “was made in a matter of months”, as evidence to suggest McCartney still has more to give.
