Traitors host Alan Cumming says US is always ‘teetering on the brink of awfulness’

The host of Traitors US, Alan Cumming, has said the United States is always “teetering on the brink of awfulness”. The acclaimed actor who has featured in Eyes Wide Shut, Goldeneye, and X-2 says he is no fan of having to pay taxes to what he describes as a “fascist” state. In an interview promoting his upcoming television series, Tip Toe, Cumming described his dislike of the US under President Donald Trump.

While Cumming is cited by The Telegraph as spending more of his time in Scotland than stateside, Cumming made it clear that he had no love for the President of the United States, nor his team. He said: “Of course, there are kind people in America, and I live in New York, which is a different kettle of fish to the rest of America, but the government… It is a fascist country, and I’m paying taxes to it. It’s horrible.”

He added of the Make America Great Again movement: “Make America like the 1950s again, more like. When black people would serve you, you could do whatever you liked, and anyone who you didn’t like, you would get the boys to duff them up. That’s what they want. That’s what they’re creating.

“It’s not a new thing for people to be so bigoted and intolerant – it always has been like that. It’s just been suppressed. What’s shocking now is how public and blatant it is and how comfortable people feel agreeing with it.”

In a separate interview with Radio Times, Cumming praised former President Barack Obama, but says the Democratic Party leader is partly to blame for the fractured times in the US. Cumming said: “I love Obama, but I do feel he didn’t do us a favour by not letting on about the level of racism and fury he was subjected to. We all thought America was in a much better state than it actually was, because it’s always just teetering on the brink of awfulness.”

Cumming, who became a dual national and was sworn in as a citizen of the US in 2008, has remained politically active and has called out Trump and other presidents during recent years. The Toy Story 5 and Avengers: Doomsday star signed the Artists4Ceasefire open letter to President Joe Biden in October 2023.

The 61-year-old will star in Glenrothan alongside fellow acclaimed actor Brian Cox and Shirley Henderson. The film, which was released in the UK on April 17, was described as a “love letter to Scotland”.
