The Rolling Stones fans decide on the band’s most underrated songs

Fans of The Rolling Stones are trying to figure out the band’s most underrated songs, and have narrowed it down to a select few.

Some of the songs featured in discussions on The Rolling Stones subreddit were known only to “die-hard” fans while others did not feature staple members like Keith Richards. The rarer tracks in discussion were kicked off by a user who suggested Winter from Goats Head Soup as some of The Rolling Stones’ most underrated efforts. They wrote: “The most underrated Stones song EVER. The song I am talking about is Winter from Goats Head Soup. This song is so unbelievably beautiful from the lyrics to the guitars to the strings and to Mick’s vocals.

“I honestly think it could be a top 3 song by the Stones for me and maybe Jagger’s best vocals in a song. Keith actually doesn’t even play on the song (Jagger plays rhythm and Taylor plays lead). Just the way the guitar starts the song off sounds like a razor blade or something. One of the best parts is when Taylor’s solo is combined with the strings. This song is quite similar to Moonlight Mile which is my all-time favourite song by anyone ever.”

Fans have since called Winter a “great song” which would certainly feature as one of the band’s most underrated efforts. One reply reads: “Winter is an all-time favourite Stones song for me. I tend not to rank their songs as I can never settle on any list, but if I were ranking them then Winter would be high on the list.

“Yes it’s underrated, though not by fans steeped in their work. It’s amazing this song was never a hit, Winter is also the answer to the question of songs they’ve never done live but I wish they would one day.”

Another reply suggested a song from It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll. It reads: “Great song. My choice for their most underrated song personally though would be Time Waits For No One. An absolutely beautiful song with an amazing solo by Mick Taylor, and hardly anyone except die-hard Stones fans know it.”

Tracks from Tattoo You were also suggested, with the album itself seemingly underrated when it comes to the wider public. One dedicated fan wrote: “No Use in Crying for me. I think fans who listen to whole albums love side two of Tattoo You and like this one well enough.

“But to me it’s exceptional in so many ways, the guitar work, the rhythm and blues knowledge, the arrangement, and it has a seamless quality, every note being placed perfectly. The band has ignored it, and as far as I know, most of the world has too. Attention movie directors, this song is perfect for your heartbreak scene or your romantic mystery vibe!”

Another agreed, saying they never gave Tattoo You a chance and were pleasantly surprised with the results. They wrote: “There were so many songs on Tattoo You that I never gave a chance to. But there were some great songs on there. I know you mentioned it but No Use in Crying and I also really like Worried About You. The Mick Taylor fan club might not like them but I do!”
