Bob Dylan fans ‘disappointed’ by second Wolf Trap show despite huge change to one song

Bob Dylan fans were left a little underwhelmed by the veteran songwriter during his second show at the Wolf Trap. Dylan is performing the final shows of his 2026 North American tour, and will take a short break before a set of 30 European dates. The Wolf Trap National Park performance featured songs from Rough and Rowdy Ways, Nashville Skyline, and Oh Mercy.

While fans appreciated the better sound quality from Dylan and the band, attendees were left a little “disappointed” with the show on the whole. Those who saw Dylan at the Filene Centre in Vienna, Virginia, shared their thoughts on the set, which didn’t seem to click with certain crowd members.

While some fans preferred the second night at Wolf Trap because of the improvements to the overall sound quality, others were left wondering whether the slight setlist changes were all that great. One fan wrote: “Overall, I enjoyed both nights, but preferred night 2 due to the improved sound… but maybe that was related to where I was sitting. That’s my last Bob show for the year. Here’s hoping to more in the future.”

Another replied: “I was there for both nights. When he opened with To Be Alone With You, I was excited thinking that we’d get a few different songs than the first night. However, I was a little disappointed that this was the only difference between the sets. I still had a great time and loved getting to watch him play two nights in a row.

“Watching him while he closed with I Shall Be Released, I was thinking of how much musical and cultural history has passed through him. That was a song he jammed on with The Band during that magical summer in the Big Pink basement in 1967. Now they’re all gone, and he’s the last one left.

“The venue is not far from where he stood and performed in 1963 during the March on Washington. He saw Buddy Holly perform live in 1958, three days before the fatal plane crash. It got me sad thinking that it might be the last time I get to see him. If he is still touring next year I’m going to try my damnedest to see him again.”

The original poster to the Bob Dylan subreddit was keen to point out that Dylan had made a few changes to the instrumental stylings for that night of the tour, too. The fan wrote: “I think there was more jamming and passing solos around on night two than night one. There was a long jam at the start of I Can Tell. Bob nodded to Joel to play, and then when it came to the part where Bob often starts singing, he nodded to Joel again, giving him the green light for another verse of jamming.”
