Arctic Monkeys fans share ‘farewell album’ theory: ‘There are so many signs’

Fans of the legendary rock band Arctic Monkeys believe their latest album, The Car, has a crucial significance to the band.

The Alex Turner-fronted group has not released any new material except for a song featured on the War Child album, Help(2), since the release of 2022’s The Car. Rumours suggest the band are not getting back together anytime soon, despite speculation from fans. Those hoping for new material from the Favourite Worst Nightmare hitmakers may be waiting a while longer than they had anticipated. In the meantime, r/ArcticMonkeys subreddit users took to analysing the band’s most recent album project. The Car was met with mixed reviews by those wanting more of the same rock and roll style as their earlier works.

But to fans who had wanted to hear material similar to Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, they were left delighted by the context and commentaries found on The Car. Fans have since suggested The Car could be the band’s farewell album. One listener asked: “Do you think The Car was their farewell album? Honestly, what does everyone really think? There are so many signs of it in the lyrics…”

While the fan’s suggestion of The Car being a farewell album could be taken at face value, others believe it delves deeper into Arctic Monkeys and their feelings toward old material. One fan replied: “Kind of. A farewell to the people who refuse to let go of the past and explore the new possibilities that the future brings.

“Many of us have been in a similar place. We’ve had people we had to leave behind because they are like anchors to who we used to be instead of who we are now or who we want to become. Perhaps some of us have been those people ourselves as we refused to accept the changing of the times and we were left behind by others.

“I think that these past three records paint a good picture of what is actually happening with the boys. AM was a colossal achievement. While I don’t think it’s their best work, it was their Thriller or their OK Computer. They weren’t going to top AM again, even if they tried, the album still gets played everywhere in my country and on TikTok, new fans are discovering it.

“I think that once you reach such a level of success, musicians are faced with the crossroads of either trying to squeeze more juice from the orange by making more stuff with that template or jump the shark and pull a Kid A.”

Another agreed, adding: “I don’t think so, I think it’s more of a goodbye to their old style of music, especially with some of the lyrics, and I interpret Big Ideas and the music industry taking over and trying to displace their music style, which also suits this theme.”

Others believe the album was not intended as a farewell to the music industry but that the longer the gap between The Car and another album, the more it will be viewed that way. One fan explained: “No, but if the hiatus goes on for a longer time, everyone will find signs that match their predictions just as they’ve been doing since the album came out. So in a way, it’ll have been a farewell album, but not their intention.”
