A performance from legendary rock group The Rolling Stones has been called ‘the best’ in their career, thanks to one song.
Performing The Last Time seems to have sealed the deal for many listeners, who believe the Mick Jagger-fronted group were in perfect form during a show in 1965. An upload of their performance to YouTube has received plenty of praise from fans who were left reminiscing about the band’s thrilling show. The Last Time would be the first original single from The Rolling Stones and would be covered by The Who just a few years later. The Rolling Stones’ version would top the charts in the UK on release and broke through into the Billboard Hot 100 top ten in the United States. But the performances of the song, particulary this one from Ireland, has been hailed as “the best”.
One fan wrote: “The 1965 Ireland concert is the best Rolling Stones I’ve ever heard in terms of sound quality, heaviness, and adrenaline! The Last Time is one of their all-time best!” Another suggested the performance is a sign of things to come from The Rolling Stones.
They wrote: “1965 was a year when you felt everything was building up to something unknown and powerful. This is a taste of it.” A third suggested: “I get a kick out of the early days of the Rolling Stones. Gritty and raw, the way they were meant to be.”
Others believe this performance of The Last Time is a defining moment for the band not just because it captures the mood of the era, but thanks to what the band did afterwards. The fan wrote: “One of the best clips of this era of the Stones. Few are the bands fortunate enough to have multiple definitive eras.”
Another agreed, adding: “This is great. I love to see The Rolling Stones on a small stage, no enormous props and add-ons. Just R&B in early English rock fashion. I like seeing and hearing Jagger singing and dancing in a more controlled atmosphere. Today he runs around the stage like a squirrel on speed.”
A third added: “Kudos to the people running the cameras recording this concert. Equal air time given to each band member, not just giving us the Mick Jagger show. Nice to see Bill and Charlie working hard at keeping the rhythm. One of the best live recordings of a Stones’ performance on YouTube.”
Others believe the song is simply one of the best of the era, irrespective of the influence it had on The Rolling Stones’ future works. One person wrote: “One of the 60s’ greatest songs.” Another added: “Killer performance by The Rolling Stones.” A third shared: “Prime Rolling Stones… out of sight.”
