Fans of the legendary musician George Harrison believe a song which followed up Here Comes the Sun is “better”.
While Harrison would achieve the most success immediately after The Beatles‘ break-up, it’s a song which featured on his eighth solo album that has fans wondering whether he was at his career best. Some believe a song he wrote to act as a follow-up to Abbey Road track, Here Comes the Sun, is better than The Beatles’ classic. A post to the r/Beatles subreddit saw fans ask whether Here Comes the Moon, which features on Harrison’s self-titled album, is better than the classic Fab Four song. One fan asked: “Is it a hot take to say this is better than Here Comes the Sun? One of my favourite George solo songs, it’s so beautiful and peaceful. Feels like a mix of Beautiful Boy and Here Comes the Sun.”
Fans did believe it’s a hot take to suggest Here Comes the Moon is a better song than Here Comes the Sun, but some believed there was some logic behind the suggestion. One listener wrote: “This whole album is one of the best solo Beatles efforts.” Another agreed, adding: “I love this album, great songs, great band, great production, a warm late ’70s vibe.”
A third suggested that, while the song was not better, it was the track they returned to more. They wrote: “I wouldn’t say it’s better, but I find myself listening to this more. Specifically, the demo version. I guess better is always subjective, though, so that’s fine to say, too.”
Some suggested playing Here Comes the Sun so often had them seeking an alternative, and that Here Comes the Moon was ideal for that purpose. One wrote: “I don’t know about better per se, but having played Here Comes the Sun to extinction, I find myself reaching for this one more often. It’s a very pleasant listen.
Others believed Harrison had written a similar song to Here Comes the Sun more for the financial benefit than anything else. One listener wrote: “The first time I showed this to my wife, she went, ‘Oh, he wrote a sequel to get people to listen to it. It even sounds like he’s singing ‘Here comes the Moolah Moolah Moolah….'”
Another added: “I enjoy it, but I don’t rate it anywhere near as highly. It works well with the overall vibe of the album (which is great, by the way), but I rarely listen to it in isolation.” A third wrote: “I actually think this is one of the weaker songs off the album (possibly the best solo Beatle album released), but it’s still better than Here Comes the Sun.”
Harrison’s self-titled album was released on February 14, 1979, and features a guest appearance from Eric Clapton. The self-titled effort peaked at thirty-nine in the UK Albums chart.
