Paul McCartney says he once ‘brought Jesus’ to The Beatles’ recording session

Paul McCartney says he once “brought Jesus” along for a recording session with The Beatles.

While the Wings frontman would not literally bring the Son of God into the studio with him, he did seem keen on attending the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band sessions with a man who appeared on his doorstep, claiming to be Jesus Christ. It seemed apt that this person would appear at McCartney‘s home at the time, especially given the band were about to record Fixin’ a Hole. The song itself, McCartney says, was written about fans who were hanging outside of his house “day and night” hoping for a chat with the legendary musician. It’s a song which was born out of not only frustration with these fans, but a genuine desire to connect with them. McCartney says he would let them in as and when he could, but had to draw a line after a woman told The Daily Mirror she would be marrying Macca.

Explaining the song in 1967, McCartney said: “It’s really about the fans who hang around outside your door day and night. ‘See the people standing there/ They worry me, and never win/ And wonder why they don’t get in my door.’

“If they only knew the best way to get in is not to do that, because obviously anyone who is going to be straight and be like a real friend is going to get in… but they simply stand there and give off the impression, ‘Dont let us in’.

“I actually do enjoy having them in. I used to do it more, but I don’t as much now because I invited one in once and the next day she was in The Daily Mirror with her mother saying we were going to get married.”

Decades after recording the song, McCartney would confirm he brought “Jesus” with him to the session. He said: “Strange story, though. The night we went to record that, a guy turned up at my house who announced himself as Jesus. So I took him to the session. You know—couldn’t harm, I thought.

“There were a lot of casualties about then. We used to get a lot of people who were maybe insecure or going through emotional breakdowns or whatever. So I said, ‘I’ve got to go to a session but if you promise to be very quiet and just sit in a corner, you can come.’ So he did, he came to the session and he did sit very quietly and I never saw him after that.”

It would be the first and only time Jesus sat in with The Beatles. Though McCartney would bring him along to the Fixin’ a Hole session, he never showed up for the future recordings. The rest of the band didn’t seem all that bothered by McCartney’s guest, either.

McCartney added: “Introduced Jesus to the guys. Quite reasonable about it. But that was it. Last we ever saw of Jesus.”
