Bruce Springsteen fans believe one of his “least talked about” albums is a “gem” from his discography.
The Boss has plenty of all-time greats in his discography to choose from, but one of his lesser-known releases has been hailed as a magnificent piece of work. Springsteen‘s efforts on We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions was the subject of much praise in the r/BruceSpringsteen subreddit, with many suggesting it’s an album which needs more praise. A post to the forum reads: “This has to be the least talked about Springsteen album.” On release in 2006, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions received universal praise. Springsteen’s tour to follow, which ran from April 20, 2006 to November 21, 2006, was likewise praised.
The tour would not feature The E Street Band however, with Springsteen opting instead for a collection of musicians who had played with him on The Seeger Sessions album, as well as a rotating guestlist of pianists, banjo players, and vocalists. Fans say The Seeger Sessions: We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions and the live album, Live in Dublin, are must-listens.
One fan wrote: “It’s a gem. The Live in Dublin album is even better. I’d love to see Bruce do another album like this, but of protest songs. Lots of Woody Guthrie, some more Pete Seeger and others. I feel like we need something like that these days.”
Another agreed that the Live in Dublin album is essential listening, writing: “When I was exploring the Boss’ discography, I came to this album with a ‘guess I have to’ attitude, ready to listen to it and be done with it.
“I never could have imagined I would like it so much! Such a great record, the whole vibe from this and Live in Dublin is a nice detour from Bruce. Wrecking Ball is, to me, the album Bruce made after being inspired by these Seeger songs (I’m actually surprised it was not the album that immediately followed up!).”
A third shared: “I feel a little ashamed to say, as a big Bruce fan, that my favourite album has zero original songs, but it’s the truth. This is my favourite album.”
Others who saw The Boss on this tour say it’s one of the best Springsteen has put on. One shared: “Saw him on this tour and it was incredible. The album is great, but seeing it live was next level.” Another added: “I would say it’s his best concert I’ve been to.”
A third wrote: “I remember as we left, I told my friend that if Springsteen did this for the rest of his career and didn’t bring back the E Street Band, I’d be fine with that. Though having said that, I’m fine with the E Street Band too.”
