A celebratory post for Luck and Strange, the solo album released a year ago today by David Gilmour, could be a knock at ex-bandmate Roger Waters.
The Pink Floyd pair have endured a decades-long back-and-forth with one another, and a recent flare-up became apparent in a post to Instagram from Gilmour. The veteran guitarist released Luck and Strange on September 6, 2024, the same day as bass guitarist Waters’ birthday. While there were no birthday wishes for Waters, who turned 82 yesterday (September 6), there was a celebratory post for Gilmour’s studio album. Gilmour wrote: “Wishing a happy first birthday to my album Luck and Strange. Still very proud of the record and the tour it led to. Thanks to everyone who supported both.”
Fans believe the September 6 release date was a conscious decision from Gilmour and the label, with the Luck and Strange release coinciding with Waters’ birthday. One fan wrote: “Interesting release date.”
Another added: “Happy birthday, Roger, I mean Luck and Strange, sorry.” A third joked: “On Roger’s birthday makes it funnier.” Gilmour’s post to Instagram gathered over 17,000 likes, and it’s not the first time fans have made the connection between the Luck and Strange release date and Waters’ birthday.
Fans had previously suggested that the release of Luck and Strange on the birthday of fellow Pink Floyd bandmate, Roger Waters, is no coincidence. A screenshot of the album release date and Waters’ birthday was uploaded to the r/PinkFloyd subreddit, with one user joking: “You can’t make this stuff up.”
Fans have since pointed to previous birthday wishes sent by the Pink Floyd Instagram account to Waters as examples of Gilmour’s alleged trolling. The songwriter behind albums like About Face and Luck and Strange was praised by fans for his tongue-in-cheek efforts.
One user wrote: “David Gilmour has been trolling Roger on his birthday the last four years.” Another user replied with screenshots of Pink Floyd posts on social media, which wish their former band member “peace and enlightenment” on his birthday.
Another added: “These guys are 80 and 78 they aren’t gonna be around that much longer and they are behaving like Taylor Swift, still petty over grudges from years ago. Not expecting them to share the stage ever again but behave like Elder Statesmen.”
But some were unconvinced by the theory Gilmour had chosen the date of release to poke fun at Waters. One fan wrote: “The date was probably decided by the record company and they probably had no clue it was his birthday. Still ironic and awesome though.” Others disagreed, though, and some fans maintain it is a “delicious” joke from Gilmour.
They wrote: “No way. An artist like Gilmour can choose release date. And no way Gilmour doesn’t know it’s Waters birthday. Delicious.” Another added: “He can, but would he bother to if someone had already set it? I don’t really think it’s significant enough for him to care, it’s just a funny coincidence.
