Pink Floyd fans are figuring out one of the reasons David Gilmour released his latest studio album, Luck and Strange, on September 6.
A theory over the legendary songwriter’s album release on September 6, 2024, appeared on the r/PinkFloyd subreddit. Fans suggested the release of Luck and Strange falling on the birthday of fellow Pink Floyd bandmate, Roger Waters, is no coincidence. A screenshot of the album release date and Waters’ birthday was, with one user joking: “You can’t make this stuff up.” Fans have since pointed to previous birthday wishes sent by the Pink Floyd Instagram account to Waters as examples of Gilmour’s alleged trolling. The songwriter behind albums like About Face and Luck and Strange was praised by fans for his tongue-in-cheek efforts.
One user wrote: “David Gilmour has been trolling Roger on his birthday the last four years.” Another user replied with screenshots of Pink Floyd posts on social media, which wish their former band member “peace and enlightenment” on his birthday.
Another added: “These guys are 80 and 78 they aint gonna be around that much longer and they are behaving like Taylor Swift still petty over grudges from years ago. Not expecting them to share the stage ever again but behave like Elder Statesmen.”
Others joked Gilmour was giving the best present he could to Waters in the form of a new album. One user wrote: “David Gilmour is giving Roger Waters the absolutely best birthday gift that he possibly can and people are hating. Figures.” Another asked: “I wonder if Rog will listen to this album.” A third joked: “Of course he will. Just so he can find points to criticise.”
But some were unconvinced by the theory Gilmour had chosen the date of release to poke fun at Waters. One fan wrote: “The date was probably decided by the record company and they probably had no clue it was his birthday. Still ironic and awesome though.” Others disagreed, though, and some fans maintain it is a “delicious” joke from Gilmour.
They wrote: “No way. An artist like Gilmour can choose release date. And no way Gilmour doesn’t know it’s Waters birthday. Delicious.” Another added: “He can, but would he bother to if someone had already set it? I don’t really think it’s significant enough for him to care, it’s just a funny coincidence.
“Now, if it was released as a Pink Floyd album, I’d be 100% sure it was an intentional ‘fuck you’ to Roger. But I just don’t see how a solo album sends the same message.” A third added: “There is no way it’s a coincidence. None.”
