George Harrison and Eric Clapton’s performance of Something in 1991 hailed by fans as ‘incredible’

A performance of Something from Eric Clapton and George Harrison has been described by fans as an “incredible” moment.

The veteran songwriters took to the stage together for a series of shows in 1991. The pair’s performance from Japan has since been uploaded to YouTube. Those who have watched footage of the performance were left in agreement over the song’s “incredible” power on stage, and part of the charm comes from the veterans on stage. Fans were full of praise for the performance, which took the Abbey Road classic and introduced some refreshing instrumentals. Clapton and Harrison’s chemistry on stage is a surprise, though the pair shared a decades-long friendship.

It’s a stunning rendition of the song which has left some fans in tears. One user took to the comments under the YouTube upload and shared: “That made me cry. How amazing for those people to be there. George’s guitar playing was incredible.” Another added: “Simplicity is sometimes the best. This is the best guitar playing I’ve heard by George.”

A third fan of the rendition added: “Magic happens when two legendary guitarists on stage together.” Some have thanked the uploader for sharing the rendition, with many suggesting it is the version of Something they return to most of all. One fan of the Clapton and Harrison collaboration wrote: “Words aren’t enough for this. The song, the performance, the emotion.”

Another added: “Over the years, this performance has moved me like no other. Thank you, George!” A third agreed, adding: “This song is a classic. I especially love the guitar intro by George Harrison, it’s just amazing. Clapton is brilliant as well.”

Other listeners have said Clapton deserves praise for convincing Harrison to take up a tour in the early 1990s. One user wrote: “Eric Clapton should be awarded a medal for getting George to tour Japan in 1991. Without this concert, we would not have an updated recording of George’s classics played live by George himself. The live in Japan album is a must for any George Harrison fan.”

Harrison played few shows after his time in The Beatles, especially when compared to his bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. He once commented on why he doesn’t enjoy touring, with Tom Petty recalling a visit from the ex-Beatle, who died in 2001.

Petty, speaking in 2002, said: “The last time he came over here, which wasn’t that long ago, he was playing the guitar and singing, singing me new songs that he had written, which were just so beautiful. I said, ‘I wish you would just put a mic up, and let’s tape you just like this.’ He didn’t want to do it — ‘Maybe later.’

“I remember him visiting me on tour in Germany. He would come to the side of the stage and look out. But he really didn’t want to go on. He would go, ‘It’s so loud and smoky, and they are acting so crazy. I just feel better back here.'”
