Fans of The Rolling Stones were left wondering if a new album could be on the way following a rumoured cancellation of a 2025 tour.
The Mick Jagger-fronted group released Hackney Diamonds in 2023 and were believed to have been preparing to tour across Europe, with dates in the UK included, later this year. While not confirmed or announced by any member of the band, it is believed touring plans have been shelved. Fans are now wondering what The Rolling Stones will do in the interim, as tour plans may be brought back to the table next year. Some are hopeful the group will record more material as some say they “already have half of it in the can”. Their last album featured collaborations with Elton John, Lady Gaga, and Paul McCartney and is believed to have been a “productive” session which has some leftover material.
Said material could be used to make a third album, according to hopeful fans on the r/RollingStones subreddit. One user asked: “What’s next for The Rolling Stones? What do you think they will release next? I’ve heard there are rumours of a new deluxe reissue coming soon, Black and Blue being the most likely one.
“I think in terms of deluxe reissues, there is a lot of potential in either of the 1967 albums, lots of outtakes from then and a great live bootleg of their Paris show they could release. But I don’t think any of The Stones, especially Mick, like that era so it’s seems unlikely. A European tour seems to be on its way, I think some rumours of South America maybe even Australia.”
Some believe a batch of new songs could be on the way instead of reissues of old works. One user suggested: “Another studio LP might come out soon as they already have probably half of it in the can already or so I’ve heard.”
Another added: “Yeah I think Hackney Diamonds sessions were pretty productive and they’ll be able to cobble together another album.” A third wrote: “I kind of hope the cancelled summer tour will give them some time in the studio!”
In an interview with Reuters last year, Jagger confirmed there were enough songs recorded during the Hackney Diamond sessions to make another album. He said: “We’ve got a lot more, so I think we may be set up to make another album quite soon.”
Though new material has been teased, some fans were keen to receive remasters and live album releases from the archives. One user wrote: “More live albums from previous tours would be awesome.” Another added: “Yes, they would, and please give them good album covers too.”
One detractor, however, has suggested the allegedly cancelled tour this year could be the end of the group. They wrote: “They’re not touring in 2025 so it might be already over.” The Rolling Stones has said there are no plans to stop working as they enjoy performing. Ronnie Wood, the band’s long-serving guitarist, has also just finished recording an album with The Faces’ Rod Stewart.
