The Beatles say Now and Then just gets ‘better and better’ as they hope for updated Anthology release

The last-ever song from The Beatles gets “better and better” for fans, who hope a new Anthology release is on the way.

A post to the r/Beatles subreddit saw members share their hopes for future releases from The Beatles’ backlog. One user wrote: “Now and Then just gets better and better. Nostalgia is a big thing. I wished I never listened to the demo. Do you feel the same? Also it sounds like they are working Free as a Bird and Real Love. Do you think an updated Anthology is coming this fall? Or do you think we will get a 10′ EP with all three Beatles tracks remixed?” Hopes of future releases of the post-breakup Beatles songs were shared in the thread, with many hoping for remixes.

One user wrote: “I’d love to hear a remix of Real Love. There’s a lot of tape hiss over John [Lennon]’s vocals that I would love to hear cleaned up. I think it’s the strongest of the three songs. Sometimes I feel like the only person who heard John’s demo first and didn’t go into the Beatles version unspoiled and with fresh ears.”

Another user added: “I’d love a version of the Anthology albums remixed with this kind of tech featuring Now and Then.” The Anthology collection served as a multimedia compilation of Beatles releases, with Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, as well as producer George Martin, all interviewed for the retrospective. A three-volume set of double albums was also released, and fans are hopeful for a fourth installment following the release of Now and Then.

Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison, confirmed mixes of Free as a Bird and Real Love using the same tools that improved the sound quality of Now and Then are in the works.

He said: “I hope for it to be worked on the same way… to remix those original songs using the same technology as we used on Now And Then, because they didn’t have that in the ’90s. We [he and Sean Ono Lennon] were both very impressed at how it sounded.”

Others were left hoping for further remasters given the response to the Now and Then demo. One wrote: “I think the Now and Then demo is dismal. Like, horrible. Harrison was right at the time. How Paul turned it into this great record in his 80s is a testament to his genius.”

Another added: “Now and Then is ageing like wine. It is such a simple, beautiful song. And the arrangement the remaining Beatles added is very elegant. A beautiful homage to a long lost friend.”
