Electric Light Orchestra fans have called the band’s most-streamed song “overrated” and claim Mr. Blue Sky does not feature in the group’s ten best songs.
A series of hot takes about the Jeff Lynne-led band featured on the r/ELO subreddit and it seems people were split on whether the Out of the Blue single warranted a mention in the band’s best songs of all time. There may be reason for its “overrated” feeling according to one user, but the claim appears to have several supporters. Though Mr. Blue Sky was previously celebrated as one of ELO’s most popular efforts and the first of their songs to hit over a billion streams on Spotify, dedicated fans have turned sour on the song.
One user wrote: “My hot take is usually that while a really good song, Mr. Blue Sky is overrated and not in the top ten ELO song list.” Some appeared to agree with this assessment, with one merely replying “preach it”. Others have expanded on the suggestion of snubbing Mr. Blue Sky from a top ten songs list.
Another wrote: “I’ll go farther and say it actually prevented me from getting into ELO for the longest time until one day I finally put on A New World Record and was totally blown away by Tightrope, which is still my favourite ELO track to this day.” A third suggested it was due to it being “overplayed” that the song would fail to rank in a top ten.

They wrote: “If it wasn’t so overplayed I think it would be top ten for sure. But a lot of my fellow Gen-Zers know ELO only from Mr Blue Sky, and it sucks.” Further comments on the track found later in the thread have suggested it could be the “cheesy” album ruiner, which detracts from Concerto for a Rainy Day.
A separate user wrote: “Mr. Blue Sky almost ruins Concerto for a Rainy Day, but the ending that resolves the whole suite just narrowly saves it. Mr. Blue Sky is too cheesy and made me think all ELO sounded like that until I heard Tightrope and deeply regretted not taking the plunge sooner.”
Another user fumed at the song and branded it one of the worst in their discography. They wrote: “Mr. Blue Sky is the worst song… ever. Not ever, but damn, I love ELO. I fell in love when Standing in the Rain dropped… but Mr. Blue Sky kills me.” A separate comment reads: “Mr. Blue Sky is overrated.”
