The Beatles legend Paul McCartney has paid tribute to Marianne Faithfull, who died yesterday (January 30) at the age of 78.
Faithfull, best known for works like As Tears Go By and Losing, passed away in London surrounded by her family. A spokesperson for Republic Media confirmed: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”
Music legends like Mick Jagger, Graham Coxon and now Paul McCartney paid tribute to the Broken English songwriter. A statement from the Wings frontman appeared on his Instagram earlier today (January 31). It reads: “What sad news that Marianne Faithfull has passed away.
“She came into my life in the Sixties and was a beautiful, sweet seventeen-year-old who radiated innocent joy. Then through the years I was lucky enough to run into her and to become a life-long friend. It’s very sad to think that I won’t be meeting her again but my memories of our encounters over the years will always bring me joy. May God bless you Marianne and guide you in the next steps of your journey.”
McCartney’s tribute to the legendary singer comes after The Rolling Stones frontman and Faithfull’s former partner, Mick Jagger, paid tribute to her in a post to Instagram. He wrote: “I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull.
“She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered.” Faithfull had recently provided voice work for the Timothée Chalamet-starring Dune, and also appeared in the Nick Cave and Warren Ellis concert film, This Much I Know to be True.
Faithfull’s last studio album, She Walks in Beauty, saw her collaborate with The Bad Seeds’ Warren Ellis. It released in 2021. Faithfull had previously collaborated with The Bad Seeds’ band leader, Cave, for her 2018 album, Negative Capability. Revisiting old recordings on the album, Cave featured on a new version of Witches Song from her 1979 classic, Broken English.
Further tributes to Faithfull were made by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, as well as Blur and The Waeve guitarist Graham Coxon. Cocker wrote: “We met Marianne at a TV show & she asked me to write a song for her. I said yes – as long as she gave me a title. ‘Sliding Through Life on Charm‘ was her reply.” He attached a performance the pair did of the song on an Etienne Daho special on French TV, adding: “Slide on Marianne. You were very special.”
Coxon, who posted a tribute to Twitter and Instagram, wrote: “You’re the only person that said the things I really needed to hear at a time when I really needed to hear them. You gave me the confidence/permission to ‘fly’ and to shake off self consciousness/doubt-you told me I was beautiful when I felt ugly- 4eva in your debt.”
