The Rolling Stones fans share fond memories of 1975 tour – but are all ‘bummed out’ by one band departure

The Rolling Stones fans are reminiscing about the band’s 1975 tour, but were left “bummed out” by the departure of a crucial member.

Sharing their memories of the 1975 US tour, where the band toured with no particular album to promote, fans were left staggered by the quality of the performances. But a departure from The Rolling Stones’ lineup left a few long-standing listeners a little upset. The Rolling Stones’ Tour of the Americas ’75 saw the band enlist the help of guitarist Ronnie Wood for the first time on stage. Though the tour was not initially to promote an album, compilation album Made in the Shade was released to capitalise on the publicity the tour brought the band.

Their extravagant performances featured Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts as the main members of The Rolling Stones. Wood, as well as Billy Preston, Ollie Brown and Ian Stewart’s talents were also enlisted, but they did not cover the loss of one member which has left people reeling decades on from the shows.

Taking to Reddit with their memories of the show, one fan wrote: “I attended this tour in Toronto. Still have my ticket stub which was $11. Unfortunately Mick Taylor had just left the band, Billy Preston was a great addition to the show.” Another wrote: “My first Stones concert was this year, in Chicago. What a great time. Was bummed that Mick Taylor wouldn’t be there, but there’s something about Ronnie.”

An interview with Taylor after the tour saw the former guitarist, who was credited on Exile on Main St. and Sticky Fingers, confirm he “had enough” of being a member of The ‘Stones. He said: “I guess I just felt like I had enough. I decided to leave and start a group with Jack Bruce. I never really felt, and I don’t know why, but I never felt I was gonna stay with the Stones forever, even right from the beginning.
Some suggested their attendance at the gig led to a life-long love and attendance of further shows from The Rolling Stones. One user wrote: “Philly June 1975. My first concert going year. Age 15. Gotta say that subsequent shows, even my last with them LFF Philly in July 2019, were better, maybe the best!”
Another wrote: “I saw this show at the Hampton Coliseum. ’75 was a long time ago. The Outlaws were the opening act and I don’t know about the whole tour but Billy Preston played keys the night I saw them. He even got to play Outta Space with The Stones backing him up. Great concert and it remains in my top five of all time.”
Fans were also keen to explain the massive penis used by The Rolling Stones, with the performance featuring the phallic object which would, according to one fan, “inflate when they played Star Star.” Charlie Watts also conceived of a lotus flower-shaped stage to go along with the sometimes malfunctioning inflatable phallus.
