Neil Young fans list their ‘most calming songs’ from legendary songwriter with 1990s album listed most of all

Neil Young fans have searched through the legendary songwriter’s discography for his “most calming songs”.

Young, 79, will headline Glastonbury later this year and fans of the Harvest and After the Gold Rush songwriter are trying to figure out his most easy-going songs. Taking to the Neil Young subreddit, fans shared their suggestions and a song from his masterpiece, Harvest, cropped up frequently. A post asked: “Most calming songs? For me it’s probably Music Arcade, Boarding House Already One [live version], Sail Away or Barefoot Floors.

Other Young fans pitched in with suggestions, with many writing in to offer up a Harvest song as one of the more relaxing Young rips. One user suggested: “Tell Me Why, Albuquerque, Tired Eyes, Harvest Moon.”

Another replied: “Harvest Moon is soooo calming.” A third wrote: “The whole album is pretty calming. I’ve always had insomnia and sometimes when I couldn’t sleep as a kid my mom would put on music for me. Harvest Moon was #1 in the rotation.” Harvest Moon, which served as a follow-up to the classic Harvest album, released in 1992. Other users also considered it as the most tender and calming of Young’s work.

One wrote: “Good to See You, Silver and Gold, Unknown Legend, Harvest Moon, From Hank to Hendrix, One of These Days.” Another added: “Birds. I think it’s his prettiest song short of Harvest Moon or Thrasher.”

It comes as Young fans also named their favourite underrated song from his discography, pointing to another late career album, Sleeps with Angels. The original poster writes: “One word: Slowpoke. Possibly my favourite post-1974 CSNY song ever released. Neil fucking Young man.”

Another user, who has the top comment on the post so far, suggested Prime of Life as another deep cut which does not get as much of a look in as Young’s more established songs. The Young and Crazy Horse collaboration can be heard on his 1994 album, Sleeping with Angels. Some agreed with the suggestion, with one user writing: “I was going to suggest Change Your Mind, but this works as well.”

Sleeping with Angels featured in a few more comments left by fans of the veteran songwriter, with both Prime of Life and Change Your Mind tipped as underrated. A third added: “Change Your Mind is a fantastic song.”
