Fans of Electric Light Orchestra are still debating the band’s use of artificial intelligence on the Over and Out tour.
One fan suggested the concerts, which mark the likely final dates Jeff Lynne’s ELO will play in the United States, were “dragged down” by the use of artificial intelligence. The imagery used behind the band during their recent live performances was met with controversy, with one disgruntled fan taking to the r/ELO forum and writing up their thoughts on the “really bad” visuals.
The user posted: “Did anyone that went to see ELO in the last few months for their tour also get bothered by the use of AI images? They looked really bad and were just really distracting. It sort of sucked because the music was great as expected but the visuals dragged down the concert down so much.”
Some concert-goers suggested they were not the least bit bothered by the corner-cutting use of artificial intelligence for the concert backdrop. One wrote: “Didn’t bother me at all. I was there for my man Jeff and for his glorious music. The visuals are secondary.”
Another agreed, but suggested they see why others may be underwhelmed or even insulted by the use of generated imagery rather than purposefully made art. They wrote: “Uhhhm I did not have a problem with it, but I can see why people do. For me, it did not really take away from the show, but I get that using AI generated images is controversial, I don’t know how they arrived at the decision to use it. I don’t think Jeff had anything to do with it(?) Either way I’m sure that most people still appreciated the concert no matter how they stand with the ai situation.”
Others agreed with the original poster’s assessment of the artificial intelligence, with one writing: “The decision to use AI was bad. It looks ugly and is unethical. Nobody is cancelling Jeff, and every other aspect of the tour was incredible. End of story.”
It comes after fellow Reddit users dubbed the band “lazy” for their use of artificial intelligence at a performance on the Over and Out tour. The band are set to play their final concert dates in Manchester, Birmingham and London’s Hyde Park later this year.
User miimeverse had previously written: “The concert was great. All who have yet to see it, enjoy! That said, there was a big sour spot for me: AI art was used on the screen for most of the songs. It felt lazy. With just an ounce more effort, there are stock photos of train stations, forests, cities, etc. that would have been far better visuals than mushy, sterile, lifeless AI art. Alas.”

If they’re watching the background video instead of listening to the music…they ain’t fans.
You go for it all, that is why it’s called a show….and ELO are and always have been known for their visuals….it’s a big part of their show
Really? Do you go to see fireworks or to listen to his music?
They booed when Dylan went electric. Some people can’t handle the future.
