Why ring in the bells with loved ones when you can wait for the chimes and immediately plug your speakers into this Noel Gallagher demo? A sombre little number not good enough for his latest recording dirge, Council Skies, slopped out as a New Year treat. In a similar style to We’re Gonna Get There In The End, which would later be featured on his most recent High-Flying Birds record – Gallagher may retrofit this piece into whatever comes next. Hopefully, there is more of a break for those with working ears, but to those who spill more coffee than they can hope to wolf down, In a Little While comes through, a thick and fast demo which reminisces with much simplicity to its lyrics.
Gallagher stands once more in opposition to the generalities. He is far from finished; he claims. Demo cuts are usually an example of how an artist can grow in private but for Gallagher, it is a showcase of how little has moved him in the last decade. More acoustic ditties are ripped from the songbooks of other artists and dumbed down to black-or-white trivialities. Perhaps it is the production which ruins Gallagher then, the sheen of the studio cannot hold a candle to the raw side of his efforts here. One man and his guitar, with a bit of piano thrown in there too. It is the indie artist’s speciality. Singing secrets and the plain toast organisation of this one is too simple, too blinkered, to have much of any meaning.
There are times when simplicity is what we must love about an artist though In a Little While is too fixated on the back and forth it so desperately chases. This is not a narrative particular to Gallagher and it is in no way built to his benefit here. A demo which can only highlight how half-baked his officially released materials can sound. In a Little While does hone his experience though, it highlights him as the likely talent out of a bad bunch. If the choice is between Noel and Liam Gallagher, the former wins over on this one – but only barely. Have this in a playlist with anything else and it is all but forgotten. In a Little While is a whisper on the wind, drowned out by anything louder than chirping insects or the low hums of silence.
Gallagher has always suffered, alone or in a group, to land lyrics which have experience or expectation behind them. Unfortunately, In a Little While is no different to the experiences he has set out on for the past thirty years. There is no flavour to it, no personable appeal which Gallagher can use to pull a new listener. Instead, these are reactionary and everyday. Take whoever you want still working from this moment – from the colloquial charms of Sam Fender or Jarvis Cocker to the intrigue and interest of heavenly, gothic topics as presented by Hozier and The Last Dinner Party. Each has a semblance of the image they hole to cultivate through an interest outside of their writings, Gallagher does not have that, all he has is a very faded setting sun and a love of his hometown which prompts Joy Division covers, for he dare not touch the sun nor his own emotions, like a pathetic, guitar-playing Icarus.
