Bob Dylan has been dubbed a “brat” for cutting off guitarist Joel Paterson during a moment that involved the audience at the Wolf’s Trap show. Dylan and the band are wrapping up their North American tour ahead of a 30-show tour in Europe. But a performance at Wolf’s Trap last night proved memorable for attendees.
Dylan, who has been performing songs from Oh Mercy, Rough and Rowdy Ways, and Tempest on this tour, was hailed by fans for a strong vocal performance. Just a week ago, Dylan performed what fans consider to be the worst show of the tour, and yet he seems to have rallied for this show last night (July 24).
A fan who shared his thoughts on the show confirmed that Dylan had let guitarist Joel Paterson play fast and loose with the audience. They shared to the Bob Dylan subreddit: “He gave his guitarists some freedom to play a bit. At one point during Black Rider, Joel got the crowd going, and while they started clapping, Bob cut it short and started singing, which immediately made the crowd stop clapping so they could listen to him. He’s such a brat.”
They also noted the show was one of the very best they had ever seen, and that Dylan had not sounded better in a long time. They added: “He messed with the mic a little but only a little. The sound was great- the best I’ve heard it. Normally it is inconsistent, and he shouts a lot, like on I Can Tell (YOU DON’T LOVE ME NO MORRREEE!!!), but this was by far the best I’ve heard his voice sound, either because his voice sounded great or the sound guy was on it or sitting that close helps or some combination of these, but he sounded smooth throughout most of the night.”

Dylan also performed renditions of When I Paint My Masterpiece that caught the ear of attendees. One wrote: “Not only was When I Paint My Masterpiece my favourite rendition of that song so far (which I always love), it may be my favourite rendition of any song I’ve ever seen him do live. It was so, so, so good.
“This is the most I’ve seen him dance, but maybe it’s because it’s the closest I’ve been to him. He was rocking out behind the keys for a lot of the night, mostly on I Can Tell, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Under the Red Sky, and Goodbye Jimmy Reed.”
