Taylor Swift makes ‘back to 2020’ update with fans given 24-hour timer — despite clear omission

Taylor Swift has issued a 24-hour timer to fans wanting to take it “back to 2020” with her Folklore album. The release celebrated its six-year anniversary yesterday (July 23), and Swift has celebrated accordingly. For just 24 hours, the Folklore range of merch, which featured nine cardigans, is available on her merch store.

The update was confirmed by The Taylor Swift Updates, with fans told they had just 24 hours to bag themselves one or all nine of the cardigans. Their post to X reads: “BACK TO 2020! Taylor Swift has fully transformed her store to “folklore” for 24 hours, in honour of its sixth anniversary, with all 9 cardigans available.”

The themed cardigans are named after each of Swift’s album releases. An orange cardigan with stars on the sleeves represents The Life of a Showgirl, while a blue cardigan emblazoned with 1989 has been made for the 1989 album. Each cardigan is £70 and available for 24 hours.

Despite the thrill many fans shared when shopping for the cardigans, some were quick to point out that Swift’s range missed out two albums. One fan wrote: “Where’s Debut and Reputation?” Others hope the Folklore anniversary merchandise drop will lead to further releases from the album, mainly vault tracks and alternate versions.

A fan shared: “Now we want Folklore (6th anniversary edition) with The Lakes (original), Cardigan (Cabin Version), Caroline, and 13 From the Vault songs.” Swift announced Folklore on July 23, 2020, as a surprise for fans during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Swift’s statement from the time reads: “Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, Folklore. Surprise! I wrote and recorded this music in isolation but got to collaborate with some musical heroes of mine; Aaron Dessner (who has co-written and produced 11 of the 16 songs), Bon Iver (who co-wrote two with me) and Jack Antonoff (who is basically musical family at this point).

“Engineered by Laura Sisk and Jon Low, mixed by Serban Ghenea & Jon Low. The album photos were shot by the amazing Beth Garrabrant. Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed.

“My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with. Love you guys so much.”
