Bob Dylan hailed for ‘phenomenal’ show with attendees praising one song’s new style

Bob Dylan is continuing to delight his fans while on the Summer 2026 tour. The veteran songwriter performed in Philadelphia last night (July 14) and offered up a massively different version of one of his best songs. Dylan has performed songs from Time Out of Mind, Oh Mercy, and Another Side of Bob Dylan while on this tour. While the setlist has been switched up somewhat from show to show, the bulk of the songs performed by the legendary musician remain the same.

What has not remained the same, as fans have pointed out, is the rendition given to each of them. When I Paint My Masterpiece has been singled out as the biggest change of all, as new guitarists Joel Paterson and Julian Lage leave their mark on the Greatest Hits Vol. II song. Jad Tariq has also featured in a handful of shows, but was absent for this date. Renditions of those classic tracks were hailed by attendees who took to the Bob Dylan subreddit to share their love of these new interpretations.

One fan wrote: “Just ended and wow it’s was phenomenal. For my first Bob Dylan show ever, it was amazing! I cannot wait for the bootleg to be released (I did record the entire show).” Another agreed with the praise for the performance, saying that Dylan put on an outstanding performance.

They wrote: “Incredible show. Putting on the Ritz riff under When I Paint My Masterpiece was genius. The new guitar players are the best I’ve heard with Dylan since 2018.”

The original poster replied: “Same! Somehow, I completely missed Putting on the Ritz riff because I thought he switched songs when in the middle of When I Paint My Masterpiece.” New guitarists Paterson, Lage, and Tariq were drafted in following the departure of both Bob Britt and Doug Lancio.

Fans were also full of praise for the “bouncy and energetic” Rough and Rowdy Ways renditions featured in the recent shows. One person wrote on the Bob Dylan subreddit: “Bob & Co. did it again! Great setlist – bouncy and energetic adaptations of the Rough and Rowdy Ways tracks, the heavy rain and pure silence of the crowd moment was unforgettable, and that I Shall Be released finale, absolute perfection.”

Another added: “Great show from row five. So cool to see a new guitarist debut. When Bob brought out the harp, he had this smile and look like, ‘I can’t believe I’m playing guitar in Bob Dylan’s band.’ Tony Garnier hung out and watched John Doe’s set, then talked to some fans. Awesome night.”
