Bob Dylan thrills with ‘vibrant’ Pittsburgh set after making line-up adjustment

The Long Hot Summer tour continues for Bob Dylan and his new band line-up as attendees praised the “vibrant” performance. The veteran songwriter is expected to tour Europe later this year, but will continue his North American tour until then. Dylan’s set in Pittsburgh featured the likes of I Shall Be Released and cuttings from Rough and Rowdy Ways, Oh Mercy, and Time Out of Mind. The 16-song set also featured songs from Under the Red Sky and Nashville Skyline, with Dylan switching up his setlist slightly.

He has also changed the line-up of musicians appearing with him. Bob Britt and Doug Lancio both left the band earlier on the tour. Julian Lage, the jazz instrumentalist, was drafted in briefly but due to commitments in Europe has since dropped out. Joel Paterson and newcomer Jad Tariq were part of the line-up last night which also featured Dylan’s long-serving bass guitarist, Tony Garnier, and Anton Fig on drums.

Fans were thrilled by the performance and once more hailed Paterson and Tariq for adding a whole new energy to the show. One attendee took to the Bob Dylan subreddit and wrote: “This show was soooo good. Enjoyed every single song, and Bob looked happy and kept smiling and sounded lovely and vibrant. Nice mix of songs that I was prepared for. He played It Ain’t Me Babe and I’d like to hear it like that live a thousand more times.

“I think he was perfect on the piano and harmonica, and his band was legit. Was ready for the crowd to be having their own experience and definitely able to stay in a very good vibe. People around me were funny and happy and mostly helped to make things pleasant. Extra ticket found a home with a guy who seemed glad he came, and everything worked out fine.

“Got to hear some stories from folks around me seeing Bob back in the day and then shared a taxi with a kind stranger after we maybe missed the bus. Let’s do it all again. False Prophet, Crossing the Rubicon and Tryin’ to Get to Heaven were my favourites too… and the rest.”

Another fan hailed the show, adding that Dylan is “on an incredible run” with this tour. Others noted that the crowd were a mixed bag, with some complaining of older fans who spent the whole performance complaining.

One person wrote in a separate subreddit thread: “I’m sorry to hear it. I was on the left side of the lawn up against the fence and my observation was that older folks were talking and complaining, while younger folks were VIBING. Mixed crowd for sure, but I was able to really enjoy the show.”

Another added: “Very good show tonight. My experience at the front of the lawn I was shocked how many people were constantly walking around during the show. But the people around me were locked in and not talking at least.”
