Neil Young fans argue veteran songwriter ‘should be a three-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member’

Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Neil Young should be a three-time inductee according to fans of the veteran songwriter. Young was inducted once as a solo artist and again as a member of Buffalo Springfield. Despite the accolades which cemented his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status, fans are now calling for him to be inducted as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash are already members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a three-piece, but some believe the band did their best work when Young was involved. A fan took to X and wrote: “Neil Young is so powerful he technically should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times, but they were afraid of his aura, so they left him out of CSN. Everyone knows he should be there three times.”

Young was inducted in 1995 as a solo artist and again in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield. Crosby, Stills, and Nash were inducted in 1997 as well but Young is not officially listed on the induction for the group he would sometimes feature in. Listeners were quick to point out that Young’s coming and going within Crosby, Stills, and Nash had been the reason he was not included in the induction.

They wrote: “He left himself out of CSN so many times there was really no point in putting him in again.” Despite not being inducted as a member of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Young did note his own backing band, Crazy Horse, when he was inducted in 1995. Fans questioned the decision years later and wondered what Young had meant when he said he couldn’t have done it without Crazy Horse.

One fan took to the Neil Young subreddit and wrote: “I think this was Neil’s way of protesting the fact that Crazy Horse members were not inducted with him.” Another added: “The main reason I can think of is that they’ve been something of a constant in Neil’s musical life. There are places that Neil simply cannot go musically without them.”

A third added: “There is something special about crazy horse, and it brings out something magical with Neil.” Should Young have been inducted as part of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, he would be only the second musician inducted three times. The first was Eric Clapton for his work with The Yardbirds, Cream, and as a solo artist.

Other artists with just two inductions include all four members of The Beatles, Dave Grohl for both Foo Fighters and Nirvana, Paul Simon for Simon and Garfunkel and his solo work, as well as Stevie Nicks for both her solo career and work with Fleetwood Mac.
