There are no plans for a new Radiohead album according to guitarist Jonny Greenwood, who says a lack of planning is partly to blame.
While the Thom Yorke-fronted group got back together for a series of shows in late 2025, it will be more than a year before we see them again. Radiohead has confirmed they will play a series of residency-like shows by continent. With Europe and the United Kingdom checked off by the band last year, it may be some time before gig-goers get to see them in London, Berlin, or Madrid again. Instead the band will target other continents and play similar patches of shows, but when this will occur is yet to be announced. Greenwood, in a recent interview speaking about the band’s work and his solo endeavours, has also ruled out a new album in the near future.
New material from the band could come, but right now their focus appears to be on preparing for the next batch of tour dates. While every member of the band has spoken positively of the 20 shows they played in Europe last year, Greenwood says all that stands between the band and a new tour is the band itself.
He explained in an interview with El País: “It felt amazing. I just stood there listening to Thom singing, thinking, ‘What an amazing sound. What great songs.’ We’re very lucky we can still do it, and people want to see it. There were some great shows, in Madrid they were particularly fun.
“We’re very bad at forward planning as a band, and when we go on tour, we have to decide like a year and a half before the concerts begin, which is crazy. We’re talking about how to do it again, but obviously nothing will happen for ages.”
Greenwood had previously spoken out on what he believed was a particularly weak period for the band, despite it bringing about one of the group’s most beloved albums. Speaking to MOJO Magazine earlier this year, Greenwood took aim at House of Cards, the In Rainbows classic, and suggested it should have had a sound similar to an Iggy Pop song.
He said: “There are songs I feel like we could have better arrangements for, but everyone else seems to like. I was convinced that House of Cards should sound like an Iggy Pop track. But I can accept that it would probably have killed something beautiful and tender.”
Elsewhere in the interview with Mojo Magazine, Greenwood suggested returning to touring with Radiohead had been a great experience, but he missed making new music with the band. A Moon Shaped Pool, released in 2016, is the latest release from the band, and it does not appear the group has any interest, currently, in recording new material.
Greenwood said: “Yeah. It’s incredible that we’re playing live again and that it feels so great, and everyone is loving each other’s company. You hear of other bands getting together and having multiple managers and multiple sound people. We seem very blessed.”
