Impatient fans of the legendary rock band The Rolling Stones are questioning why Mick Jagger is staggering the release of Foreign Tongues.
The band’s upcoming album will be released on July 10, but promotional material for Foreign Tongues started to release in April. Two songs from the album, lead single In the Stars and a limited pressing of Rough and Twisted under The Cockroaches moniker, were released in previous months. Whether The Rolling Stones release another song to promote Foreign Tongues is yet to be seen, but some believe the Jagger-fronted group are taking too long to release their new album. Fans took to the r/RollingStones subreddit and shared their frustrations with the band.
One person wrote: “Why the long lead time before the Foreign Tongues album release? The Cockroaches promo campaign (including the release of Rough and Twisted), the presser with Conan O’Brien, the interviews with Jimmy Fallon, and the release of the In the Stars video and song are already weeks past. You would think the album release would be imminent to keep the momentum going.
“We STILL have more than a month til the album’s release. So…why? I’m sure even the band members will be long over it by then. I’m looking forward to it, but the long lead time makes little to no sense.” Some fans were more accommodating of the wait time and believe there is a lot for the band to organise before release.
One person wrote: “One possible reason why is that it takes a long time for them to design and manufacture all of the swag, web pages, social media posts, schedule publicity appearances, press records, etc. An army of contractors and publicity people is involved in this kind of effort. This being the case, they know the news of an upcoming Stones release is going to get leaked to the public at some point. So, they announce the release early in an effort to control the narrative.”
Another added: “I have to agree, too. Decades ago, it seemed to make sense for a big Rolling Stones release to be weeks and months away. I’ve grown to like the Black Keys or Jack White’s more prolific and quicker release schedule. It’s only rock n’ roll.”
A third shared: “Because at the core of the band, Mick has always been an economist. The albums are created by the artist. However, the album’s release and tours always focus on maximising economic returns. I’m pretty sure if asked, Keith [Richards] would admit that this is Mick’s world, and as long as the silver continues into the buckets, he’s cool.”
Some fans have since suggested it could be because of an upcoming tour by Ronnie Wood that the album is set to release so late after its announcement. One person wrote: “I don’t really know, maybe it’s due to scheduling? Ronnie Wood has a tour starting soon and needs to rehearse, but anyway, I thought the campaign was so good that no one will forget the album is coming out, maybe they’ll even release another single a little before.”
