Paul McCartney fans are relieved that the veteran songwriter passed on a comedy special roast for a clear reason.
The Beatles member and Wings frontman was offered the chance to appear on a roast, where he would have been targeted by a string of comedians and famous faces. Previous people to sit in the hot seat include President Donald Trump, Chevy Chase and, most recently, Kevin Hart. Fans were delighted that McCartney would not be involved in the roast, with his team confirming to Variety that an offer to appear had been rejected by McCartney. Jeff Ross, the self-proclaimed “Roastmaster General” and host of previous roasts, said he was sad to see McCartney had rejected the offer.
“We did ask Paul McCartney at one point,” comedian Jeff Ross, the executive producer of the franchise, confirmed. “To me, that would be a fantasy roast. Paul McCartney doesn’t need anything, but a Paul McCartney roast would be good for the world. It would be so funny to me because he is so loved.”
But fans were relieved to hear that McCartney had snubbed the team, suggesting that the roast would have been too obvious given McCartney’s historic works. One fan wrote: “Because someone is going to do a John Lennon assassination joke and then Paul’s genuinely upset and then everyone’s upset.”
Another added: “Why would the world’s most successful living musician agree to have his dead wife and friends made fun of by the world’s hackiest chuds for an hour. What could possibly be in this for him?”
A third shared: “It’s a widely known fact that Paul has been a sensitive little flower (complimentary) his entire life and would definitely not take to any kind of dark humour about his life or personal tragedies in a comedy special, I don’t know why they even tried.”
Others have suggested the string of jokes to have appeared at the roast of McCartney would be far too obvious. One fan wrote: “I just KNOW the jokes would be like, ‘She was just 17, if you know what I mean… haha WHAT DID YOU MEAN?’. ‘Remember when your best friend got killed.’ ‘Best musicians of all time AND Ringo.’ ‘Remember when your wife died?’ ‘You’re vegetarian.'”
Some did flag that a successful roast of McCartney could have come to pass, though it seemed unlikely. An X user wrote: “It would have sucked if they had gone with the normal Comedy Central crew. But a Paul McCartney roast led by Conan O’Brien and only featuring comedians who actually know anything about The Beatles would have gone hard.”
Another added: “If VH-1 was still a thing they could have done this.” A third added: “Fred Armisen and Tim Heidecker are both total Beatles nuts.”
