Paul McCartney new song dismissed as ‘not very special’ by fans in lead-up to The Boys of Dungeon Lane release

Paul McCartney fans have slammed the most recent release from The Beatles and Wings veteran as “not very special”.

The song, Home to Us, was released earlier today (May 8) and features the first duet between McCartney and Ringo Starr. The pair’s vocal work is backed by Chrissie Hynde, though the song itself has failed to impress fans eagerly anticipating the release of The Boys of Dungeon Lane. McCartney confirmed his first studio album in six years would be released on May 29, but it appears the album’s second single has done little to excite. Fans took to the r/PaulMcCartney subreddit and shared their thoughts on the song, with Home to Us released to a seemingly mixed reception.

A post to the forum saw one fan ask: “Thoughts on the new Home to Us track?” A fan replied: “Really like it. Macca sounds great. Love the guitar solo.” Another added: “Last night there were tons of people hating on it. Not sure where they heard the song early, but I completely disagree with them. I quite liked it.”

Not everyone is as optimistic about the song, though, with one user suggesting it was far from McCartney’s best work. One listener wrote: “It was pretty good… it was all right… it wasn’t great… but it was fine.”

Another added: “Its fine. Not great, not very special. Nice to hear Macca and Ringo sing about their hometown. Don’t love the production. Also feel that Paul’s voice is being tinkered with a lot, he sounds fresher and younger than on McCartney III and I’m not sure if I like that.”

A third listener wrote: “I’m not a fan of the production, especially the drums. It reminds me of New or Egypt Station.” The person who started the thread replied and noted that Home to Us had seemingly de-aged McCartney’s voice in a way that doesn’t sound all that natural.

They wrote: “They’re trying too hard to make McCartney’s voice younger; his natural voice now would fit this album. You can barely hear them over the instrumental. I didn’t expect an upbeat song to be on this album, but there’s Macca for you.”

Another slammed the song as one of McCartney’s weakest. They wrote: “Sadly, one of his weakest tracks in quite some time. Can’t thing of a song less interesting musically and conceptually than this that he’s done on the last few albums. The melody is not very engaging, the lyrics themselves are not very detailed in regards to the imagery of their Liverpudlian childhood. Without the novelty of a Ringo feature, I think everyone would agree it’s kind of just… bad.”

A third shared: “It was good. Production is a bit generic and the vocals have been tinkered a bit much (probably to match Ringo’s style of vocal production). Melody is a lot of fun and vocal delivery is fun.” A fourth wrote: “It’s tacky.”
