Bob Dylan has claimed the reason he doesn’t talk on stage is because of what the audience expects him to say.
The veteran songwriter, who recently wrapped his Spring 2026 tour, once suggested that listeners were not interested in what he had to say. Therefore, Dylan does not speak to his audience. On the rare occasions that he does, it’s usually a mention of another artist or interest of his, or a simple “thank you” to the crowd. Speaking about why he rarely speaks to the audience back in 2006, Dylan noted the perception of him as an artist who never interacts with the crowd is the making of the crowd themselves, rather than his choice.
He told Jonathan Lethem of Rolling Stone Magazine at the time: “I can’t stand to play arenas, but I do play ’em. But I know that’s not where music’s supposed to be. It’s not meant to be heard in football stadiums, it’s not, ‘Hey, how are you doin’ tonight, Cleveland?’ Nobody gives a shit how you’re doin’ tonight in Cleveland.
“They say, ‘Dylan never talks’. What the hell is there to say! That’s not the reason an artist is in front of people. An artist has come for a different purpose. Maybe a self-help group – maybe a Dr. Phil – would say, ‘How you doin’?’ I don’t want to get harsh and say I don’t care. You do care, you care in a big way, otherwise you wouldn’t be there.
“But it’s a different kind of connection. It’s not a light thing. It’s alive every night, or it feels alive every night. It becomes risky. I mean, you risk your life to play music, if you’re doing it in the right way.”
Dylan may have much more on his mind when touring anyway, according to his former touring manager who described the All Along the Watchtower songwriter and Neil Young as “very flighty” when on the road.
Speaking to Shakey biographer Jimmy McDonough, Elliot Roberts shared his thoughts on what made the pair so similar.
Roberts, who has managed both Dylan and Young, said: “They’re both very flighty. They have the exact same road habits, they prep the same way. They’re very, very similar in what satisfies them – good shows, bad shows. There’s some huge dissimilarities. Bob likes to have his families in place and go to them. He’s on the move, doesn’t like to stay in one place long. Neil will stay in one place forever, given the opportunity.
Richard Fernandez, a tour manager who worked for both men, added: “Neil’s eccentric with a purpose – Bob’s eccentric with a purpose, but I’m not quite sure what that purpose is, and the only person who knows what that purpose is may be Bob. Everybody else is speculating.”
Young had high praise for Dylan too, once saying he wishes he could be the Mr. Tambourine Man songwriter. Young said: “He’s the master. If I’d like to be anyone, it’s him.
