Bruce Springsteen’s cover of The Doors hit hailed as ‘one for the ages’

Bruce Springsteen has been hailed by fans for his cover of a classic song by The Doors at the American Music Honours.

The Boss took to the stage last night for a “blistering version” of Light My Fire and a performance of his own hit song, Thunder Road. Footage of The Doors cover has since gone viral on social media, with Springsteen taking a break from the Land of Hope and Dreams tour to cover the classic track. A post from Springsteen fan account SpringNuts shared the full performance of Light My Fire and singled the veteran songwriter out for praise in capturing Jim Morrison’s spirited style.

The fan account wrote: “Blistering version of The Doors’ Light My Fire by Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt, Marc Ribler, and the Disciples of Soul tonight at the Springsteen American Music Honors. Bruce hitting that Jim Morrison scream in the end and Stevie doing some gorgeous guitar work as The Ribler orchestrates the band masterfully! One for the ages!”

Another fan took to the r/BruceSpringsteen subreddit and added: “Just saw some videos from last night. Nice cover of Light my fire by Bruce and Stevie, good Thunder Road version with the ESB, then I saw the acceptance speeches and I got so overwhelmed with emotions.

“What a beautiful and priceless bliss to see my heroes still being out there doing their thing, I’m a young fan, and three years ago I wouldn’t bet a cent that I would have caught them live and that they would have toured for four years. Best thing about the speeches is realising how humble, simple and great these guys are.”

Springsteen has also received praise for the ongoing Land of Hope and Dreams tour, with he and The E Street Band joined by Tom Morello on a tour of North America.

The fan wrote: “Springsteen gave me chills last night (Phoenix). It was a spontaneous decision for me to go solo to this show. I thought it would be fun and nostalgic because Bruce was my first concert ever back in 1984!

“I did not expect the sense of hope, grief, and love to wash over me as it did last night. It was so healing and cathartic. I was blown away by the music. Bruce’s band is amazing! I was surprised to recognise them all and loved Max’s drums, Tom Morello absolutely shredding, the sax solos, and Bruce’s harmonica … all had me in pieces. Much love to the man and the band! I’m so lucky to have been there!”

Another fan agreed, adding: “It was an incredible show, deeply meaningful for me while also being a hell of a good time!” A third added: “I went solo too (used to go with my dad before he had cancer) and it was absolutely the best choice to fly down for the show. It felt as close to a religious experience as I’ll ever have.”
