Pink Floyd hit was written after ‘sudden revelation’ from Roger Waters

A hit track written by veteran songwriter Roger Waters came to him after a “sudden revelation”.

The Pink Floyd member says that one of the tracks from The Dark Side of the Moon came to him out of the blue, and it formed the basis of one of his very best songs. While Waters has gone on record as saying he “regrets” giving songwriting credits to the rest of the band – David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright – one of the songs featured on the album appears to be solely from his mind.

Waters, in an interview with Word Magazine, said: “No, I don’t think there is. But I remember when I wrote Time – yes, I was twenty-nine at the time – it was all true. It’s not like I made the song up or anything. What happened was I suddenly had this revelation. I was twenty-nine before I suddenly twigged that I wasn’t in a rehearsal. That I wasn’t preparing for anything. That actually my real life had been happening for some time without me noticing it.

“It was that weird feeling, you know, that I’ll soon be ready and then life will begin. But I loved the way we worked back then. Dark Side’s forerunner was a thing we did at the Royal Festival Hall [in 1969] called The Man And The Journey, which was this strange rambling sort of piece that was put together but it had some of the elements that later showed up on Dark Side Of The Moon.

“I have this memory of arriving with this song Eclipse one afternoon – in Cardiff, I think – and saying, ‘Look I’ve nearly got an ending for this.’ And we may have even done it that night in the show.”

Fans of the band believe The Dark Side of the Moon is a life-changing experience, with one listener sharing as much with members of the r/PinkFloyd subreddit. A post to the forum saw a user share their experience with the album, which they described as a “mind-boggling” moment.

Fans of the band went on to share further releases from the band and welcomed the newest listener to the fandom. The original poster wrote: “I listened to The Dark Side of the Moon while high for the first time and it was genuinely life-changing. Was up in Michigan with some friends for a football game, they both have been smoking/taking edibles for a while and offered to let me try one.

“Took a 20mg and after about an hour we went to bed. I threw on The Dark Side of the Moon with noise-cancelling headphones and it was incredible. I could literally feel the music coursing through my body and see the colours of every note. Truly can’t explain how mind-boggling it was that this beloved album cold be even more spectacular than I already thought it was.”

Fans of the band were quick to welcome the listener into the subreddit and shared their experiences with the album. One user wrote: “Thank you for sharing, fellow Floyd head. Now check out Echoes: Live at Pompeii and your ascension will be complete!” Another wrote: “Fuck yeah dude. Welcome to the machine.”
