A crowd attending a concert by Bob Dylan “went wild” for a special guest brought on for It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.
The classic track from Bringing It All Back Home is still a staple of Dylan’s setlist, featuring often on the Rough and Rowdy Ways setlist in recent years. But a performance of the song at Slane Castle in 1984 elicited delight from the crowd, who were staggered to see the special guests involved with the performance. The show has since been uploaded to YouTube, where fans have left comments praising the overlap of talent featured at the gig. Slane Castle hosted Bob Dylan and Santana on their joint tour, but it’s the addition of Van Morrison that has thrilled members of the public. Those leaving comments on the video were staggered to hear Morrison join Dylan for one of his best-ever songs.
One fan wrote: “Brilliant. The sound is bad. The video is bad. But it’s still brilliant. Two of my three favourites.” Another shared: “Fabulous. I was there too – what a concert. I remember the crowd going wild when Dylan announced Van Morrison. Mick Taylor on the right, in white jacket.
“Dylan went through the songbook – even To Ramona, with an acoustic guitar. Santana – superb. I caught up on some sleep during UB40’s set, couldn’t be bothered with that. Thank you for posting.” A third wrote: “These two together are as good as it gets! Two amazing artists, very different but together, set the stage on fire!!”
It wouldn’t be the first time Dylan and Morrison had shared the stage, either, with their appearance on The Last Waltz with The Band, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell also delighting. The pair would also perform a relaxed cover of Avalon Sunset in the late 1980s.
The performance would be broadcast by the BBC as part of the One Irish Rover: Van Morrison in Performances series. He and Dylan were seen on top of the Hill of the Muses just after Dylan had wrapped his European tour earlier in the week. The performance has been hailed by viewers, with many commenting with praise under a YouTube upload of their work together.
One person wrote: “This is one of the finest pieces of anything on the entire internet. Aren’t you glad we’re able to share it with each other right now, somehow and someway? That’s beautiful. That’s the good part of this thing. So – love to you and yours – wherever you are.”
Another added: “This is one of the most beautiful things I have heard.” A third wrote: “Excellent, relaxed rendition of this fantastic tune! Bob and Van are two of the greats!” Others have shared why they keep returning to the blisteringly wonderful performance of the Moondance classic.
