What Tom Petty played on his last-ever show in Los Angeles just weeks before his death

Tom Petty would perform his last ever show on this day in Los Angeles, just weeks before his death.

The Heartbreakers frontman, who worked with the likes of Bob Dylan and George Harrison, died in 2017. He was 66 at the time of his death, which was ruled as an “accidental overdose” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. A statement from Petty‘s wife and daughter, posted to his website, stated he had a series of health problems, including emphysema, knee difficulties, and “most significantly a fractured hip”, which he was taking pain medication to deal with. A year later, Petty’s widow, Dana York, said he had been putting off a recommended hip surgery. He was described as “proud of himself” following his final three shows in Los Angeles.

York said: “He’d had it in mind it was his last tour and he owed it to his long-time crew, from decades some of them, and his fans. He had those three shows in L.A. Never had he been so proud of himself, so happy, so looking forward to the future—and then he’s gone.” Petty would play an eighteen-song set on his final show, which took place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California.
