The Rolling Stones blasted as ‘nothing but animals’ by furious child fan in letter delivered to band

A furious letter from a child fan saw the listener brand The Rolling Stones as “nothing but animals” for a bizarre reason.

While the band may have been enjoying the spoils of fame after the release of Aftermath, the Mick Jagger-fronted group were not a favourite of everyone. Not least a listener from Fiji, who was so incensed by the band that they wrote a seething letter addressed to the As Tears Go By hitmakers. The band headed to the Oceania-based country for a bit of rest and relaxation away from the spotlight, but were still dogged by crazed fans. The band’s manager at the time had made a joke about Fiji needing to do better for The Rolling Stones by being a bit more fanatic about their arrival.

But it was a joke which was taken the wrong way by one islander, who was not best pleased with the band finding a few days free after an Australian tour. The child fan claimed there was a total of 640 children who “hated” the band and that, should they encounter Jagger and the band, they would have no choice but to “spit” on them.

It’s a bizarre but bold letter made out to The Rolling Stones, who were told to get out of Oceania by the furious fan. A full letter, which saw the group called “English pigs” and “nothing but animals”, can be found below.

To the Rolling Stones,

Just wanted you to know, me and my friends with nearly the whole school, HATE you. Because you don’t look like men, you are nothing but ANIMALS, and smell like them too.

We know also that you are DIRTY and STINK. You probably never have baths which is typical of English pigs like you. I hope that you hurry up and go away from clean Fiji, because we don’t want you here, you PIGS. We HATE HATE HATE you.

I am speaking on behalf of 640 kids who all HATE you. So go and pick some pigsty in the slums of smelly England and have your MISERABLE holiday there. Your stupid road manager was upset about no-one greeting you, because we HATE you.

Your road manager needs a POKE. If you dare to set foot in Suva, me and my friends will tell some of the MEN of Fiji (Suva), to come and SPIT on you, and go to the TOILET on you. Thats all your worth. So do what I said, and GET OUT, we HATE you.”

The letter was received at a time when the band were finally growing as a group. Jagger believes Aftermath is a game-changer for the group, saying: “That was a big landmark record for me.

“It’s the first time we wrote the whole record and finally laid to rest the ghost of having to do these very nice and interesting, no doubt, but still cover versions of old R&B songs, which we didn’t really feel we were doing justice, to be perfectly honest, particularly because we didn’t have the maturity. Plus, everyone was doing it.

“[Aftermath] has a very wide spectrum of music styles: Paint It, Black was this kind of Turkish song; and there were also very bluesy things like Goin’ Home; and I remember some sort of ballads on there. It had a lot of good songs, it had a lot of different styles, and it was very well recorded. So it was, to my mind, a real marker.”
