Fans of the legendary progressive rock group Pink Floyd have named their favourite deep cut songs from the band.
There is no shortage of brilliant songs from the band’s discography, though some prove to be less popular than others. Where pieces like The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are known to the passive listener, fans of the band took to the r/PinkFloyd forums and shared their favourite deeper cuts. One user asked: “What’s your favourite deep cut Pink Floyd track? Meaning the kid of song most casual Pink Floyd listeners would probably not be familiar with. Mine is probably Wot’s Uh The Deal. The song, which featured on Pink Floyd’s lesser-known Obscured by Clouds album, proved popular with fans.
As did a handful of other suggestions from the group’s early years, with songs from Meddle and Atom Heart Mother also noted by fellow Pink Floyd fans. One user wrote: “Fearless.” Another agreed the Meddle rip was one of the band’s best songs, adding it was the “first track” they thought of when it came to lesser-known, but still great songs, from the band.
A separate comment thread suggested Atom Heart Mother may offer listeners the best of deep-cut material. One user wrote: “Summer ‘68. It’s not really ‘Floydy,’ but it has a magnificent arrangement (those horns! Those Beach Boys harmonies!) and a lovely tune.” Another user was full of praise for Atom Heart Mother, adding: “Atom Heart Mother is an album I appreciate a lot more now than when I first listened to it.
“All three lyrical songs on it are AMAZING. I love the guitar parts in If and Fat Old Sun, and Summer 68’ shows Richard Wright wasn’t a half bad songwriter. Parts of Atom Heart Mother Suite are good too.” A separate user agreed with the mention of Wright’s song, adding: “Very much a deep track. Love that Richard got this song on the album.”
Another wrote: “I think it has that sound because it wasn’t written by Roger [Waters] or David [Gilmour]. It’s a rare Rick Wright song, and yes, it’s one of the best songs the band ever recorded. It’s extraordinary. I’m pretty sure most (all?) of the orchestral instruments are played on a Mellotron.”
Other users have pointed to The Dark Side of the Moon as an example of potential deep cuts. Though the album is very well known, there are a few songs which go underappreciated, according to fans. One wrote: “I’m not sure any song on The Dark Side of the Moon can be a deep cut, but if so, I’ll go Any Colour.”
Another added: “That’s a great choice. Any Colour gets better and better with the years. A conversation between two guitars, but not only that. It is a bit overlooked on The Dark Side of the Moon, but in fact, it is on the same extremely high level as all of the rest. I love that one.”
A third added: “I think its the best showcase of one of their singular technical abilities on the album (the talent obviously being Gilmour’s guitar playing). A hot take attached to your hot take: I prefer Any Colour to Comfortably Numb (in the way of guitar solos, specifically).”
