Bob Dylan fans believe they have figured out who the “you” is on his Rough and Rowdy Ways song, I’ve Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You.
The track features on Dylan‘s latest studio album, which he is touring once more this year. Fans who have heard the song either on the album or in person believe they have solved who the “you” in question is. A post made to Twitter praising the album suggests the “you” could be the listener. The post reads: “Still on a Rough and Rowdy Ways kick. What a fucking album. I’ve always loved the interpretation that the ‘you’ he’s referring to is his audience in this tune.” While not confirmed as the correct interpretation, other listeners also believe this to be the case.
One user recalled a live performance that left “no doubt” the “you” in question was the audience. They wrote: “When I saw him in March of 2024 he stood up at the piano and delivered this song in a way that left no doubt. Like you said, the ‘you’ is ‘us’. Another has suggested the song is a sweeter contrast to a song which knocks the dedicated fans.
The user wrote: “Nice juxtaposition with My Own Version of You which I take as a jab at his fans’ gaze.” Another added: “Never liked that interpretation until hearing the song live, then I got it.” Not everyone agreed with the interpretation of Dylan’s I’ve Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You, though, as some have suggested the song is more about faith than fans.
One user wrote: “That’s a nice interpretation. Never thought of it that way. My interpretation is that it’s about God. Either way, I love how Dylan keeps going. I don’t think he’ll stop until he drops. He’s the man.”
Dylan is in his fourth year of touring the Rough and Rowdy Ways album, with his relatively unchanged setlist featuring all songs from the album but Murder Most Foul. His tour continues this year, with a stop-off for The Outlaw Tour.
