Tattoo You features one of the most underrated songs from The Rolling Stones, according to fans of the Mick Jagger-fronted group.
A post to the r/RollingStones subreddit saw members share their thoughts on what the most underrated songs from the band were, and it appears Tattoo You has the lions share. The post reads: “Most underrated Stones song. This has probably been done before. For me, it’s always been Child of the Moon. Classic. And a timeless video clip. Open to opinions though.” A “phenomenal” second side to Tattoo You received plenty of praise from fans who suggested the album holds some of The Rolling Stones’ most underrated works.
The top comment on the post of underrated songs has Worried About You, the Tattoo You track, heading up the list. One user wrote: “I love that song.” Another added: “One of my top five songs.” Fans also turned to Tattoo You rips like Little T&A as examples of The Stones at their “sexiest”.
One user wrote: “Adding Little T&A in there too. So sexy. Heaven and Tops are chefs kiss.” Another added: “The second side of Tattoo You is phenomenal!” Two other users also noted Tops as one of the band’s most underrated songs, while another suggested No Use in Crying. They wrote: “Has anyone mentioned No Use in Crying yet? If not, that’s evidence of its top-tier underrated-ness. It’s a top tune.”
The only Tattoo You songs not mentioned in the thread are Neighbors, Black Limousine, and Start Me Up.
Fans also turned to live albums and extra releases which were put out in the mid-1970s as examples of some of The Rolling Stones’ most underrated works. Memory Motel was tipped as one of their best as users suggest it should be the song that is “more popular with casual audiences.”
Another wrote: “I remember the audience reaction when I first heard them play Memory Motel live (1994 Voodoo Lounge US tour). It was such a perfect live ballad, with Mick Jagger‘s sorrowful vocals, Keith Richards‘ vocal response line, brilliant piano work, the ‘la la la las’.
“This is one of those somewhat obscure album tracks, like Out of Control, that I’m very happy they have given some additional exposure to onstage, as they are magical in that context.”
The original poster added: “All really great choices. I think every Stones fan loves Memory Motel. Maybe this should be divided into those for the general public and those who are well educated (aka Stones fans).”
A separate comments thread tipped Time Waits for No One, a song from The Stones’ It’s Only Rock and Roll album, as one of the most beautiful songs the band ever released. One user wrote: “One of the most beautiful and heartbreaking songs I have ever heard. That Mick Taylor guitar solo.”
A further comment added: “Child of the Moon, just because you really have to go out of your way to listen to it. Like, you won’t run into it by listening to a studio album.”
