Paul McCartney’s little-known Abbey Road concert had him play ‘unreleased’ songs and Beatles hits

A little-known performance from Paul McCartney has delighted fans as The Beatles and Wings member played “unreleased songs”.

Mixed in with Beatles hits were songs that were, at the time, not available. Those songs would eventually feature on Egypt Station, McCartney’s 2018 album. Fans are now sharing the Spotify-exclusive album, with Under the Staircase: Live at Abbey Road Studios strongly recommended by users of the r/PaulMcCartney subreddit. One user wrote: “For those who don’t use Spotify, did you know that in 2018 Paul released an exclusive live album for Spotify users? So for those who don’t know, back in the summer of 2018, Paul did a concert at Abbey Road to a crowd of about 80 people.

“He performed new songs on his then-unreleased album Egypt Station (Come On To Me from this show made it onto the Egypt Station Explorers edition). A week after Egypt Station was released this album was released exclusively to Spotify with a shorter seventeen song track list and I remember listening to it a bunch.

“I’ve always thought it’s been too long since he did a live album, and to me, even as a Spotify user, I still think he should release another from any tour of the past decade. So for those that don’t use Spotify I have compiled the FULL show, including tracks that didn’t make the Spotify album, into Flac format for your enjoyment!

“I know some people don’t like his older voice because it’s gotten weaker, but I think he sounds great here and hope this can bring someone some joy!” Those who want to listen to the concert recording can find it in the Reddit post linked below.

McCartney also shared some memories of his time recording at Abbey Road with The Beatles. He broke down the average day of recording, saying they had a “half hour to tune up” and a cup of tea before getting to work.

He said: “We got in at 10, then you had a half-hour to tune up, have a ciggie, have a cup of tea. Then, 10:30, a producer would arrive and come down the staircase and say, ‘OK, chaps. What are we going to do?’ And whoever wrote the song would show the others – nobody knew the song except me and John. Even George and Ringo hadn’t heard it because we’d written it the week before and this was, like, Monday morning.

“We’d show the guys the song and that would take about 10 minutes or something, do it a few times. Then we’d go to our instruments and start recording. And you had an hour and a half from that point to finish the song completely. Then it was like, ‘OK, on to the next one.’”
