Nick Cave shares the lunch he has ‘eaten exclusively’ for the past year

An entry into the Red Hand Files from Nick Cave has seen the songwriter share the lunch he has eaten every day for a year.

The legendary frontman confirmed he had eaten a homemade meal “exclusively” for the last year. His response follows on from a question asking what the Wild God songwriter would have for his lunch. A fan wrote: “I’d guess a steaming bowl of hearty broth with a chunk of crusty bread, but I’d love confirmation.” Cave has since confirmed what he has for lunch, and it is neither a crusty bread nor hearty broth. Writing back to the fan, Cave confirmed his lunch choice was “delicious” but “not for everyone”.

He wrote: “So, what do I eat for lunch? No steaming bowl of broth and crusty bread for me. Every lunchtime, for the past year, I’ve eaten exclusively a homemade açai bowl. This involves mashing some frozen açai – a super drupe that grows on the açai palm in the Amazon – into a bowl, then sprinkling over a layer of granola, followed by some vegan protein powder on top.

“Then I chop half a banana and a couple of strawberries and arrange them on top of that. I add a spoonful of almond butter, some poppy seeds, and if I’m feeling reckless, some goji berries. Delicious! Nutritious! But not for everyone, it seems.”

Cave says the meal reminded him of a previous discussion in the Red Hand Files, where he argued the point of separating the art from the artist after further controversies from Kanye West made headlines.

Cave added: “And it reminds me that we all stand before the world with our faculties – our minds, bodies, mouths, and hands – each of us shaping the environment around us. What we think, do, and say is fundamental to the survival of this grand human project. Each of us is precious, and our actions are vital, everything we do and say matters.

“We can speak beauty into the world or poison it with our words; we can build things up or tear them down; we can dream of a world that is vast, alive, and interesting, or reason it to be small, hard, and empty.

Every action we take and every word we speak builds or breaks the planet. We must approach the world as collaborators and willing participants in its preservation, and each other, Wallis, as friends.”

  1. I love that lunch! I make smoothies with those berries (or blueberries), chia seeds, a spoon of almond butter, and kale or spinach (whatever leftover greens i have that need using), half a banana, & collagen powder. Been having this lunch for a year as well.

  2. Sounds delightful! My lunch for over a year is granola, bran, mango, banana, blueberries, strawberries, boysenberries, cherries, apple and Greek yogurt! Love it! Just a little of each, lasts for hours without feeling hungry. With a lactose free coffee with lemon juice, cinnamon and honey.
