The Beatles fans have all pointed to one album in Paul McCartney’s solo career which they say deserved more love on first release.
Sharing the album cover for Ram to Reddit, fans believe it is an overlooked part of McCartney’s career, and it may be because it is washed up in the storm Wings created in their early efforts. But McCartney’s solo album features some of his very best songs according to those on the r/TheBeatles subreddit. One user asked for people’s thoughts on Ram, with many suggesting it is not only their favourite post-Beatles release, but one of the most underrated in the Fab Four members’ discographies.
One user wrote: “My personal favourite solo Beatles album. I wish it had gotten more love upon release, it’s just so damn good.” Another replied: “Same. All Things Must Pass and Plastic Ono Band are solid contenders as well, but Ram still holds the top spot for me. That’s what’s great about McCartney too – he’s got this album, Band on the Run, McCartney I and II, Flowers in the Dirt – hell, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard is another one that I can’t get enough of – so he’s got a pretty stacked solo catalogue.”
Others shared their love for Ram and heaped praise on the album. One wrote: “Probably my favourite post-Beatles album, definitely the one I listened to the most. I love it!” A second reply reads: “Definitely my fave Paul solo album. I don’t know if it beats All Things Must Pass for me, though.”
Though the album has become a beloved part of McCartney’s discography, initial reception to the album was negative, particularly from Rolling Stone magazine. Some Ram fans discussed the damage this perception had on the album, with one writing: “It got trashed by rock critics when it came out… as if that matters. He had a pretty high bar, The Beatles. I’m happy to see how much people like it today.”

Another replied: “If you mean Rolling Stone, Wenner was a big John [Lennon] fanboy and for McCartney first album had the reviewer rewrite a positive review to be negative. Probably did it with this one too.”
A third added: “Paul was blamed for the breakup of The Beatles for decades and he was panned by critics and reviewers until the end of time. What Paul attempted to do was not let the reviews bother him (for the most part) as long as he felt he was doing worthy work that was great and he was happy with his wife and his burgeoning family what the critics said was just mosquitoes buzzing in his ears.”
Another summarised Ram as “swagger in album form.” They wrote: “It is swagger in album form. Listen to that album, with all of its idiosyncracies, and McCartneyisms, that somehow work perfectly, and remember he made that album with his wife, and tell me with a straight face Macca doesn’t fuck. It is the quintessential monument to how Paul is the coolest motherfucker on the planet, specifically because he knows himself unabashedly and gives zero fucks.”
