Pink Floyd fans point to ‘fantastic’ album they feel is underrated in their discography

Pink Floyd fans are calling an underrated album “fantastic” and say it deserves more appreciation than it gets.

The band has no shortage of incredible albums with The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here among the all-time greats. Deeper cuts like Atom Heart Mother and Meddle have since been praised by fans of the band, who say their pre-The Dark Side of the Moon works deserve much more credit. One fan posting on the r/PinkFloyd subreddit wrote: “Forget Atom Heart MotherMeddle is Pink Floyd’s most underrated album. For me, Meddle is the start of the band’s golden age.

“Songs like Fearless, Echoes, and One of These Days, are just peak Pink Floyd in my opinion. The album as a whole is a super tight and strong combination of prog rock, psych rock, blues rock, and a bit of folk. Honestly, it’s almost at the same level for me as Animals, The Dark Side of the Moon, and Wish You Were Here, and it, as a whole, definitely doesn’t get enough love from fans.”

Fellow Pink Floyd lovers agreed, and suggested it was one of their best offerings. One user wrote: “I think for any serious Pink Floyd fan they know all about Meddle. It’s a fantastic album. Obscured by Clouds, for me, is the underrated one.” Another agreed, adding: “Obscured by Clouds has recently become one of my favourites. Every single song is so good. I think it’s easily the most easy listen, in that it’s not as complex and grand as the other albums.

“I can listen to it any day and every day whereas The Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here require me to be in a certain mood.” A third added: “I love Obscured by Clouds. Listened to it on a California coastal road trip in 10th grade back in 1999 and it was the perfect vibe. It’s definitely a more accessible album with shorter track times.”

Others suggested Meddle was not at all underrated, with one writing: “Meddle is commonly ranked as just below the big four, it’s not underrated at all. Saucerful of Secrets is underrated to be honest.” Another has suggested Meddle is an “appetiser” album ahead of the pieces of work Pink Floyd put out afterwards.

Some Pink Floyd fans are keen to gatekeep Meddle as an album well-known by Pink Floyd fans, but not as listened to by classic rock heads. One wrote: “The only thing Meddle is underrated by is classic rock radio, and that’s a good thing. We don’t want tracks like Fearless to end up sandwiched between Stairway to Heaven and Won’t Get Fooled Again in heavy rotation.”

Another added: “Meddle is pretty well-known and not underrated in my opinion. Never met a Pink Floyd fan that wasn’t a huge fan of it. Agreed though that it is peak Pink Floyd.

Another unheralded album is the Zabriskie Point soundtrack. Particularly the 1997 re-release with the bonus tracks. Or The Complete Zabriskie Point Sessions (bootleg). Lots of cool stuff and bits and pieces that were subsequently reworked into future Pink Floyd songs. For the Pink Floyd completist, it is a must-listen.”
